With the exception of several micro breweries, speaking of mass produced beer, the U.S. and Canada are the only countries in the world that can't make beer. It is so bad it gives me a headache to drink any American beer. The only reason I can think of is they take out the nutrition and brew it too fast by adding sugar. Foreign beer, I'm told, made the old fashioned way, has protein and vitamins, and doesn't have sugar added.

Why don't you just **** in an empty budweiser can.... You'll get the same taste, for less money.
Be a man and drink Guinness.

It would be pretty hard to brew beer without sugar since it's the foundation to fermitation. The Old German purity laws called for malt, hops and h20 only. When they discovered yeast those laws went right out the window. It's all about preference. American style lager and German style pilsner outsells all other styles wordwide. SAB and Bevco are making serious $ pushing Bud and Miller at import prices worldwide.

You're right about that. And I don't understand it.

I was simply amazed that in almost every pub I entered while tooling around Ireland, a good portion of the younger clientele (twenty-somethings) were drinking Budweiser. Especially in Dublin. It appeared to be the "cool import" beer of choice. The same thing happened when I was in London.

Marketing. When I went to Australia I don't ever remember anybody drinking Fosters. XXXX and VB--Victoria Bitter usually. It's a sad day for humankind when multimillion ad campaigns can successfully subvert people to drink an inferior product. I drink Arrogant Bastard ale, not only cause it's good, but because the owner slams "fizzy yellow beer."

Guinness has always been my beer, or rather stout, of choice. I also feel the same way that you do about the taste of Bud. However, you may have to re-think that "be a man" taunt. Budweiser has more alcohol than Guinness does. Hell, even Bud Light has more alcohol than Guinness.

Beer in Australia is more a regional thing. Toohey's Coopers Carlton and Swan are popular but it all depends on the region you’re living in. The Foster's Australian for beer campaign was a joke. Anthony Bourdain said it best in his recent show covering Australia. Using Paul Hogan to promote Australia tourism to Australians is like the US using Larry the cable guy as the spokesman to promote tourism to the US.

Wait a minute. First you say you have to use sugar then you say the Germans didn't allow it, then you say they "discovered" yeast. As far as I can tell yeast has always been in beer. Yeast is not sugar and it's been around since the first bacteria appeared on Earth. Yeast is where the B vitamins in beer come from. Sugar is simply not good for you, but mostly sugar that has had all the nutrition processed out, as in white sugar. Beer with the nutrients left in is actually...well, not good for you...but less bad...like sugar with the nutrients left in. People buy Bud and Miller and Coors because it's cheap, and it's readily available...and their taste buds don't work right. Anyway, I don't care as long as I can find beer imported from anywhere but Canada.

The first brews only contained hops, malt and water. Yeast was introduced to brews later on. Yeast needs sugar to produce alcohol and CO2. The yeast typically gets its sugar from barley. In American style lagers, the yeast gets its sugar from rice and corn.

Well I understand that...but what I'm saying is the U.S. Breweries add white refined sugar to make it brew faster...which is another way to kill the taste, let alone give people diabetes.
