Default Cheapest Hotels??? "Old Vegas?"

I'm driving from Indiana to Los Angeles next week and I'll be in Vegas on Thursday. I have only been there once and we stayed at the Stratosphere, so this time I checked rates and Thursday I can get for under $30. but Fri, Sat and Sun the rates go way up. So I'll stay at Stratosphere for Thursday for sure. Someone once said that "Old Vegas" was cheaper but I have never been to that part, only been to the newer strip.
Can anyone recommend any cheap hotels anywhere in Vegas (that is somewhat safe) for Friday, Saturday and Sunday?
I'm alone so the room is only for me.
Thanks!

Hey thanks!!! That's my price range!
Is this a "safe" area? I'm a big guy I can hold my own, but like they say, no skin is stronger than lead. Just don't wanna be in a dangerous area. Is it cool there?

I have stayed there a couple times. They are not a luxury casino/hotel by any means, but they are safe and decent. They are also very close to the strip.

Ok, just read some pretty bad reviews, but that don't mean everything. Sometimes I find people to be too picky.
Looks like a cool place, looks old school:-)
Many of the reviews speak of hookers in the parking lot........
How long does it take to walk to the strip? 5 minutes or 20 minutes? Their site states "Close to the strip", how close though?
One last thing, are the walls really paper thin as to ruin a good nights sleep?

It's no MGM, but if it keeps some $$$ in my pockets I'm cool

It is less than a mile to the strip. It takes less than 15 minutes to walk to the MGM Grand....

Driving Directions from 3330 W Tropicana Ave, Las Vegas, NV to E Tropicana Ave & Las Vegas Blvd S, Las Vegas, NV

Your challenge would be in not getting run over at that maze of an intersection, but that's probably not a bad place to stay for saving some bucks. How noisy is though LVD? It's pretty busy traffic wise, and a lot of 18 wheelers stop there don't they?

Arizona Charlies is off-Strip and is generally the cheapest place off the Strip.

The Station rooms are also among the cheapest.

See Tripres.com for good deals. Note that the hotels in Primm are 40 miles from the Strip.
