I was thinking about bringing some dollar coins with me to Vegas, probably about 150 or 200. They'd be easy to use as tips (yes, I am actually tipping this trip) and a good way of getting rid of them.

Does anyone know if I can play these in the casinos? From my last trip, I'm aware that the actual machines only take bills or tickets. But can I change dollar coins into tickets at the cashier's window or the bill changer?

Thanks

Since they're legal tender, of course you can change them at the cashier. The cashier will just give you paper currency and then you would feed that into the slot machines.

But rather than shlep 200 coins to Vegas, wouldn't it be much easier to take them to your local bank and just get a couple of hundred dollar bills to take with you?

Forget the ideal of dollar coins. They fall out of the dancer's G-strings too easily. Bring paper bills.

Your naivete is showing. Reminds me of when I worked at the Plaza years ago. Old folks would show up on the train in groups with paper bags filled with silver dollars they had saved for years to take to Vegas one day for gamblin' money. I'd exchang their silver for paper or chips and sell the silver dollars for $3.00. If you have metal coins hang onto them. They might be worth something someday to your kids.

Well, I guess some of the cocktail waitresses will be mighty happy with their tips!

The metal dollar coins I have are valuable - they're worth a buck a piece! I bought them straight from the US Mint at U.S. Mint Online Product Catalog

Carrying around dollar coins in my pocket is more handy than messing with dollar bills and will make for convenient and easy tip money. I've read not to tip with spare change, but figure that refers to tipping with pennies, nickles, dimes, etc. Whole dollars won't go unappreciated.

Unless they mistaken them for quarters.

And that's not unusual.

I sometimes would get dirty or disappointed looks from people after slipping a couple of coins into their hands, until I pointed out to them that they were dollars and not quarters.

I have since switched to tipping with $2 bills.

Ironically, I now sometimes get unusually exuberant reactions to a tip with a folded up $2 bill because the individual has mistakenly thought that I've handed them a $20!

What will probally be going through the waitress mind is " great I will now be here longer while waiting for the cage cashier to count these silly dollar coins when I cash out"
