Moving to Vegas - Sunrise Hospital area
Hello all -
Long time lurker, first time caller.
We are moving to Vegas, seeking place as close as possible to Sunrise Hospital as this is place of employment.
Looking to rent, 2000 sq ft minimum but preferably more. Safe neighborhood is our priority. We don't have kids.
Places we've looked:
1) Las Vegas Country Club
2) Metropolis
3) Turnberry
Two other places suggested to us that we have not yet looked at:
- The Stallion Mountain Country Club area - there are a lot of houses for rent in the "Desert Inn Master Plan" area just to the east of Stallion Mountain. However, the crime view details on the LVMPD site shows a lot of burglaries and stolen cars in that area. There are also places for rent in the Country Club. We have not been out there yet - from reading the forums it appears the surrounding area is sketchy?
- Houses in the Pecos/Sandhill area.
Suggestions are welcome - are we missing anywhere you can think of?
Thanks!

The LVCC is really very nice. Ultimate place for someone who is at Sunrise. There is basically no crime in the CC...Some problems in the surround...but then again Sunrise Hospital is part of the surround.
It is not inexpensive. I would expect 2,000 sf in their to run to 3000 a month or close to it.
I am not a Turnberry fan if you actually live here. The problem is that there really is very little occupancy in the place. So it ends up pretty sterile and transient. I suspect Metropolis is the same or worse.
In those price ranges of course you could likely pick up a place in Seven Hills or similar to the South or Spanish Oaks across the freeway. That is another of these somewhat exclusive gated communities. Houses in there vary from barely adequate to wondrous.

If you absolutely need to be close to Sunrise and can afford a highrise, I'd think Turnberry would be the best choice, but I haven't seen them; olecapt is the expert on that. I do know a lady who bought one of them but I've never seen it. I met a guy the other night who has a company that deals with real estate research, in particular, the new highrise trend. He said that the best buys will be downtown as the Furniture Mart will eventually become the leading industry here, taking over that spot from the casinos. Hard to believe until you hear what their plans are for all those huge buildings that are going up near downtown. The LVCC is nice, but pretty old. Both it and Turnberry (and Sunrise) are in the most dangerous zip code in town (89109), as well as one of the most dangerous in the country. You don't want to be out over in that area at night. The Strip is in 89109 but it's not the Strip that gives it it's dangerous designation, it's the area around Twain and Maryland Parkway, all the way back to Paradise Road. The area around Viking between Eastern and Pecos is pretty nice, and it's close to the hospital. There are lots of nice gated communities there as well as million dollar mansions. I still believe that is the best area of town as far as the convenience of a central location, plus the feel of being in the original Las Vegas. That would be the 89119 zip. My advise is plan to do a little driving and live in Summerlin or Green Valley. Most westerners are used to longer commutes. It just goes with the territory out here in the wild, wild west.

The Las Vegas Country Club gets my vote. There you can choose from a mix of housing options including the Regency Tower which is the high rise building...ranges from $2000 and up....The townhomes, most are two story and range from $1400 and up. There are also condo conversions in which there are many optios to choose from say from $1000 and up. Occassionally the single family comes available. Its established and mostly owners. The security is top notch.

I lived at LVCC for two months in 1990 while looking for a house, and I loved the compound itself. As others have said, security is very good inside the gates and it's a beautiful development. It's outside the gates that is the problem. I love that area of town for convenience. I've lived near there three different times, in the 60's and 70's. I worked from '98 to '05 on Maryland Parkway one block south of DI Rd. In the early 80s the demographics of the area started to change, and now it's the most dangerous part of town. Gangs roam through the Boulevard Mall and not long ago they beat a kid to death in front of his parents in the mall food court. I'm actually surprised the Boulevard Mall is still open. I'd guess shop lifting would outpace purchasing. I watched drug deals going down every single day along Sierra Vista when I worked over there. Murders in that area are a common occurance. Besides the high crime, it is one of the most polluted areas of town as far as air quality from car exhust, and allergy problems from the fruitless mulberry and other trees. In the United States, Las Vegas is second only to Phoenix for respiratory illness, and the area of the LVCC is one of the worst in Las Vegas. It always cracks me up for eastern doctors to send people here for their asthma. You'd think they should know that it will only get worse here. Maybe you should rent a place at the country club, or near there, and see if you can put up with the negatives over the positives before deciding to stay in that area.

Thanks, everybody, for your responses - I appreciate your insights!
The Spanish Oaks area looks nice - on average do you think the drive to Sunrise would be about 15 minutes (just guessing from the map)?

Yup..goes quick once across the strip. The homes in there come in two versions...before and after. The after are quite nice. The befores need work and money. Some are quite spectacular even if before.

I agree with Buzz123 about the areas along Eastern and Pecos, they still are the nicest in town, with large trees, and convenience to shopping, the Strip, and pretty much everything...the only thing that ruins the area is if you are near an apartment complex...the area has some very nice large homes and some very nice well-kept neighborhoods as well...

Some of the homes in Spanish Oaks are nice but the surrounding area is seedy and I wouldn't want to have to do all my grocery shopping at either of the two stores nearby. I turned down a great deal on a very nice house there just a few years ago because of the area surrounding it. I guess I've really gotten picky in my old age because things like that never used to bother me, but nowadays I have very little patience for lowlife people. On the bright side, you could get to Sunrise in about 15 minutes from there unless it's rush hour traffic, then you'd want to give yourself 30 just in case. If you got lucky with traffic signals, and it was on Sunday, you might make it in 10, but don't count on it.

I think you are off a bit on that area Buzz. The area between Sahara and Alta is all upper class. There are a few tracts but they are reasonably nice...generally strip workers and from 275K to 500K. It gets a little raunchy east and north of UMC but nothing really evil.
The area south of Sahara is mixed with some great stuff and some lower middle class...but no real high crime or such areas.
Ain't Summerlin (though better than most of Summerlin in places) but it ain't the naked city either.
