Bugs will be a problem everywhere, and even up in Idaho where they were pretty much a non-issue, I had to kill hobo spiders on a nearly daily basis in an old, bottom-floor college pad, and deal with the occasional cat head spider or boxelder beatle infestation. In Texas, I had to check my shoes for scorpions each morning they were so common, while here I have yet to even see a scorpion outside (I'm sure they're out there. I haven't gone searching... fact is, I'd have to go searching). I'm not even going to get into the cockroach issue in Miami. You would have to live in squalor here to even come close to what I saw in a buddy's reasonably clean (for a bachelor pad) apartment there. We'd kill several roaches a day, and find them in such fun places as bed, clothes, toiletries, and boxed foods. I'm amazed I came out of that stint without hepatitis.
Altogether, it's understandable to get frazzled by particularly ugly, invasive bugs, but I'd never let them determine where and when I can live and enjoy myself (frequent transmission of carnivorous, parasitic worms is an exception). Then you're just letting your own mind control and detract from your life, something that is rather silly when examined for what it is. It's one thing to get scared when you continually find scorpions in your linens (or are at increased risk for the aforementioned parasitic worms where you live), but you're more likely to get bitten by a grasshopper, horsefly, or ant than a cockroach. Cockroaches should only become a quality of life issue once they've infested your home.

They wouldn't let me rep you, so "good post".
The roach problem in Florida, and even in Texas, in the cleanest homes, is 1 million times worse than we have here in the worst homes.
Now if you really want to be grossed out, go to Northern Nevada, Southern Idaho during the Mormon Cricket invasion. You need snow tires on your car to keep from skidding on them.

Thanks. Of course, as is always the case, it's the OP's choice if she wants to let mental constructs ravage her attempts to be happy with relocation, but I for one always appreciate a reminder where my own mental constructs are countering my ability to enjoy life.
And yeah, luckily those crickets only get that bad in the very southern portions of Idaho, so growing up in Boise and attending school in Moscow, I never had to contend with their worst frequencies. They'd hit Boise, but didn't ever seem too populous.

Thanks Buzz I try to bring some humor. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't.
You are right about Texas. Especially closer to the gulf. If people even conceptualized how many bugs in their yard they would freak. They even have Wasps that make nests in the ground. Sucks to step on them. Saw an ant once when I was a kid that was huge and had black and red stripes. Yellowjackets made a nest behind the dryer in the garage and my Mom put her hand in it while moving the Dryer. Been stung by Bees, Wasps, you name it.
I feel relatively bug free here.
Well the exterminator that comes by work says they have like miniature versions of camel spiders here and we always have black widows around the HVAC at work so now I'm freaking myself out.
Man where are the lizards. That's what I want to see!!!

I've seen a LOT of lizards up by Red Rock, and my parents have a few in their yard in Summerlin.

The things that look like Camel Spiders are actually Sun spiders or whip scorpions. A cross between a scorpion and a Spider.

I haven't seen lizards in quite awhile. But i did see one last week while walking on the trails here in Aliante. It totally surprised me. I think it was out looking for some cricket dinner. I see tons of those too on the trails.

I have several lizards living in my front and back yards. I like to watch them out the window while I'm on the computer. A couple of them are big suckers too.
