Fishing and other sports in vegas
Can anyone give their opinion on the fishing in prospects in Nevada? I am also interested in hearing about the ability to go to sporting events in the Vegas area. What's in Vegas?

Well, there's UNLV Athletics (football, basketball, and any other college sports you can think of), Las Vegas Wranglers ice hockey played at the Orleans Arena, Las Vegas 51s just ended not too long ago which was our AAA baseball team. Many many sporting events come to town, Los Angeles Kings vs. Colorado Avs at the MGM Grand Garden Arena this weekend, Moto cross is going on somewhere in town, the NBA Summer league was here this summer, the rodeo comes to town often, lots of golfing around, that's about all I got right now....

This will answer many of your fishing questions.
NDOW - Nevada Department of Wildlife Website
As far as fishing close by, there is the largest man made reservoir in the western hemisphere just 30 miles from Las Vegas...Lake Mead. You can also go on the Colorado River below the dam, or a little further downstream to Lake Mojave. Striped Bass is what most people fish for on the lake, and unless the Stripers ate them all, trout fishing should be good on the river.
NDOW - Where to Fish
"...Game fish include largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, channel catfish, black bullhead catfish, bluegill sunfish, green sunfish, black crappie, striped bass, rainbow trout and walleye. Catch rates for 2007 were 4.49 fish per angler. Stripers averaged 19.4 inches in 2006 and rainbow trout 10.0 inches. Approximately 91% of the catch was made up of stripers and 5% were rainbow trout, with largemouth bass, channel catfish, bluegill and black crappie making up the other 4% of the catch..."
Best part of the lake for catfish and crappie is up in the Overton Arm.
There are some ponds in city parks where you can fish for catfish, bass, and small trout. Floyd Lamb Park, Sunset Park, and Lorenzi Park.
Best place to go that isn't a really long drive is Eagle Valley; plan to camp overnight as there are no facilities nearby: http://www.ndow.org/fish/where/water...rvoir_2009.pdf

Fishing isn't a sport. You have to be able to bet on it for it to be a sport.

Fishing for trout in Southern NV is a tough proposition. The week after the stocking, the stripers chow down and wipe out 95% of the trout population. Eagle Valley is nice but the reservoir seems really low and weedy in recent years. I end up doing all my trout fishing in the reservoirs near Bryce Canyon in Southern Utah.

Is one of those near Bryce Canyon, Panguitch Lake? I've never fished there. Fish Lake up north of there is one of the most beautiful lakes in southern Utah. I fished there a long, long time ago, and we were just talking about going up there again and renting a cabin.
Actually before you get to Eagle Valley Reservoir you go through Echo Canyon State Park. That in my opinion has always been better fishing than Eagle Valley Reservoir which I think has always been weedy. But we have always just called the whole thing Eagle Valley. And to make things even more confusing Eagle Valley Reservoir is in Spring Valley State Park. Nevada likes to give everything several names. But Echo Canyon is best even if it is lower elevation and a little warmer.
I just wanted to give him some of the closer places to fish. Cave Lake outside of Ely is a better place but it's a six hour drive. There are several nice places to fish in Southern Utah, like Navajo Lake, or even the small reservoir at Enterprise. You only need to stop at a sporting goods store in St. George or Cedar City and get like a three day fishing license, unless you plan to go a lot and want to get the annual out of state license.
For those who don't mind a little driving and going way out in the middle of nowhere for a nice camping/fishing experience, there is always central Nevada; a place called Kingston Canyon has a nice campground and reservoir. I only went once, but caught a lot of fish. It's off of Highway 376 north of Round Mountain before you come to US Rt 50, the loneliest highway in America.
Sunnyside is the name of the general area of three (or maybe it's four) lakes that make up the Adams-McGill Reservoir off of highway 318 in the far northeast part of Nye County on the Lincoln County line. The three biggest trouts I ever caught came out of there. And when you get done fishing there is natural hot springs out in the desert a little ways where you can get naked and relax your muscles in the hot mineral water.

Thanks for all the info. Fishing is a sport. It's between you and the fish. My dream is to catch a Tarpon in Florida and go Halibut fishing in Alaska.

You also have professional boxing, Golden Gloves amateur boxing, and at least a couple of college basketball tournaments.
