Default Some questions about moving to Vegas...but won't be for at least a year!

Hey!
This is my first post, thanks for reading!

So I absolutely love Vegas. Sure I understand there is a BIG difference between visiting Las Vegas and living in Las Vegas...but, I want to live there. I know the job market sucks right now..but I am considering moving there in a year. Like Nov 2010. Things can change and it's always best to optimistic, right?

So I have a lot of time to plan and look at stuff. But I have only been to Vegas on the strip. That's it Where are some areas that are nice to live? I have been told that "North Las Vegas" and "East Las Vegas" are pretty ghetto and high crime. Is this true? I just want to live in a nice area, where the crime isn't sky high. I am originally from Philly and there's a reason why my family and I moved from there to NJ (where I am located now)

The reason why my BF and I chose Vegas is because it's gay friendly for the most part, I love LOVE the weather, and we DO enjoy casinos . Plus it would be a huge change for us..and that's what we need.

What about the public transportation there? Is it good? Reliable? We only have 1 car AT THE MOMENT, so I am just curious is if we have to rely on public transportation once in a while.. how is it? What is Las Vegas' (or Nevada's?) public transportation system called.

Also, this would be a huge move for both of us. Besides looking for a job immediately when we get here (or even before we get here), and having a nice nest egg of savings..any other suggestions of what we need to know or what to have prior to moving? The reason why it's Nov 2010 is because we just renewed our lease here for another year, LOL so the least we can get there is in Nov when the lease is up.

I'll probably have more anal questions later. I do appreciate any help anyone can provide!

I will have lived here for a year in November and I still love it! Your perception of what is safe, and what is unsafe is going to differ from what other people perceive. However, Northeast Las Vegas, and East to about 3 miles from the Strip, yes, I perceive these areas to be unsafe. Basically, there are pockets of areas that I think are safe, but the surrounding areas can be troublesome. Crime is present all over the valley. All summer long, I saw in my area newspaper that there were car thefts, burglaries, and assaults, and I never heard/witnessed of these happening. With you living in Philly though, I know that town has a history of being a pretty rough town, so here lies your perception of safe. I come from a town that is pretty small, and have never witnessed a crime in my life.

I live in the west side of town and it takes me about 15-20 minutes to get to the Strip and Airport. The area I live in is still being developed and housing is less than ten years old. Public transportation is available, and having a car definitely helps out. There are lots of shopping areas around, in fact in a 5 mile radius from where I live, I can visit 5 different grocery stores, a Super Walmart, Target Greatland, many many restaurants, etc. The local transportation system is operated by the RTC and I believe it's the CAT system as well as the Deuce buses. They're all over the place though!

If at all possible, visit Las Vegas on a weekend after Christmas sometime, when the hotel rates drop and rent a car to check out the areas. If you're looking for an apartment, order the Apartment Guide and do lots and lots of research. These boards are great for asking questions, not like the apartment review boards that have mostly negative comments.

The most popular areas to live are Henderson and Summerlin, basically where everyone recommends newbies to live, but like I said, check out the areas, and see what you're comfortable with.

I recommend living in Southwest Las Vegas (Particularly Spring Valley). We moved here 2 years ago, and it's great. It's beautiful in terms of look, and the reason I love it, is it's not as crowded as Summerlin or other areas of Las Vegas.

I knew someone was going to 'jump' on the Anal questions. JKF!!!

HOtness, I don't want to sound rude, indifferent, or anything, but if you scroll through the threads on here, you will see 1000's of posts that answer your exact questions. Most people won't post answers, because they have replied numerous times in other threads.

From what I've learned from a few years of reading and posting, is in general west of the strip (the further the better), north of Craig road. But I don't know if you're looking to buy, rent, etc... Hope this helps and good luck.
