In nearly 20 years of recruiting new engineering grads, I've rarely recruited outside the top 25 engineering school in the country, and I'd be surprised if UNLV was even in the top 200.

I hired or approved the hiring of a thousand or so over some 30 years. I can't imagine that a graduate of a major state university would not be hired if he interviewed well. I was and remained skeptical of the "famous" engineering schools for BS level engineers MS or Phds a different story...

2. Because of my service, the govt will pay for my college, and give me a monthly stipend for 3 years, as long as im in school full time. This is 1329.00 a month. Also, i can collect unemployment from any state in the union no matter where i am for 79 weeks. Minimum from California is 450 a week for unemployment.
3. I have a 7 week old, i will be in the reserves, so we have medical coverage.
4. My girlfriend/mother of my child has 10 years experience in medical billing, so it seems she can get a job in las vegas area, according to craigslist anyways.
5. We were planning on doing one of those lease to own properties, as we want to jump in before the prices go back up.
So ive read the forum, and it all seems gloom and doom, but i think we may have our bases covered. What do you guys think about it?

You might be able to get some part time work with a contractor supporting Nellis AFB to bring in some extra income as well. Many of the contractors require a security clearance. The company I was working for in Las Vegas would sometimes hire college students. I am an electrical engineer-graduated a long time ago though and am currently working for the Navy as a civilian employee.

So i decided to do an experiment and have my girl put her resume on the internet to see what kind of response she would get. I figure I would give it a week, because unemployment is crazy high there......well she got a call back in a couple hours. She has experience in medcal billing and she has her bachelors in crminal justice. She got a call from some medical company....
So which leads me to believe she wont have a hard time at all finding a job. Also, leads to me he question.....who is really unemplyed in Las Vegas, is it those who have no marketable skills?

The lease to own is a bad idea.
Do you qualify for a zero down VA loan?
There are still nice enough houses in N. Las Vegas past Ann Road that you will likely be able to afford. $125-150K. That means $650-750/mo mortgage + tax and insurance. On three incomes, that should be no problem. Bit of a drive to UNLV, but nothing horrendous.
However, if you want to bail in three years, you should not buy.

BS degrees are what most state universities specialize in. Not a bad system; give them the money, show up (some of the time) and collect your degree. The fault is the system which requires these mostly useless degrees in the first place.

Go with your VA loan, zero down and so great deals out there.
