Um, yeah, NEXT!! LOL I would probably be excused from a jury now since I've earned my paralegal certificate and have other legal experience --- not all good mind you. They want people that don't know the law, especially the prosecutors.

As for Judges, it is not that they are mean, it is that most are stupid and are bad lawyers. They get elected to have a steady income of over $100K/yr and city benefits. Otherwise, they suck wind if they are no good.

We'll take JM Bonaventure for example. An idiot. Couldn't find his butt with both hands and a map. Has no idea what "beyond a reasonable doubt" is and does not want to be told he's wrong. Tough. He has been wrong numerous times and the law does not uphold his opinion.

He got the seat because voters didn't realize that his daddy, JT Bonaventure a DISTRICT court judge wasn't the same Bonaventure running for JUSTICE court judge. He is a DA flunky too. According to several attys I've spoken to he 'owes' the DA because of his f'ups in their office. He gave them a nice one with Simpson.

It is ashame that we rely on people like him in the court system. But, then again, who would carry on the business of the state/county, etc, if these idiots didn't. Sigh. Just no easy answer.

I guess I am the opposite of you. I am non judgemental and open minded, and would most likely be the one juror willing to stand up for the defendant. Now, saying that, if the person was a child molester, rapist, or murderer, I would be the first to convict them. I support the death penalty for trash like that. Other than that, my former statement rings true.

Why should the nature of the charges have one iota to do with the defendant's guilt?

My point exactly. That is why I should not be on a jury as I am biased.

The above... yeah, just say that if you are interviewed and you will likely be dismissed. On that note, I agree with you, IF there is EVIDENCE to support the charges.

Unfortunately, just being accused of such heinous crimes often people perceive they are true, else why would anyone be charged with such? Yup, fine line indeed.

Try the Carlin Strategy:

For years and years I escaped multiple juries by simply being who I was...a high level executive geek...nobody wants an engineering type on a jury.

Then in the late 80s boom...I was on a panel... and everybody else on the panel was smart. A University prof, couple of doctors, even a lawyer though not in private practice. We all though it unthinkable.

Turns out both the Plantiff and defendant had decided they had to have a high IQ jury for the case. So they nailed every heavy professional in that couple of hundred jury pool.

The case involved a very complex legal malpractice case. The real action had been against American Airlines who had allowed a physician flying on the airline to choke on his own vomitus with the result of substantial brain damage. But the case then got lost between various lawyers and the statute of limitations ran out. Normally the plantiff would be done for as the pursuit of the case was his problem...but this plantiff is brain damaged...so here we go. They were talking about a megatrial. First the plantiff had to prove that the case against American was real. If they did that they then had to determine which of the lawyers screwed up and how bad. They were talking 3 to 6 months and were not hearing any hardship let outs.

Luckily the involved insurance companies got together and paid the Doctor a couple of million and settled the thing. So we got off with two days.

And that's the difference in Civil vs. Criminal cases. Civil, if they have any sense, especially American Airlines and perception of their business by the general public, could cause them great business harm so they learn to negotiate a settlement to keep it from 'going public.'

Criminal on the other hand, usually gets a plea bargain IF offered which aren't very attractive unless you consider the alternative --- extended jail time if found guilty. Unbelievably, some judges impose more jail time if someone plead not guilty and the jury verdict is guilty.

Still the court system is in such a shambles and so many innocent people have been convicted that I take their 'judgments' with a grain of salt.
