I don't really get why people think California is socialist/democratic.
San Francisco...which is a great city, is solid Democratic.
But the other cities are generally very much on the right side Republic side of thinking - San Diego, Los Angeles, Sacramento, etc.
When I associate the State of California as a whole, it seems to have more Republicans in office...I always associate Ronald Reagon and now Arnold.

Because California is a failed state, and it is blue. It is just gives the conservatives a reason to put the blame on the liberals.

It is REALLY only for the Federal Presidential Election. Otherwise, California seems quite red. For one, it has the 7th largest economy in the world by itself. That is about as capitalistic as it gets. Los Angeles is about as sprawly as it gets, the posterboard for sprawl - unchecked development, etc.
Just to demonstrate how red it is, think of the ban on gay marriages passing last time around. California is red overall.
Blue states would be Minnesota, New York, Massachussets, Washington, Oregon, etc. Most of those are just blue through and through.
California has a big blue blotch in and around San Francisco, among a sea of red.

How can California be considered a Red state?
The (D) party has a majority of more than 60% in the state Senate and Assembly (i.e. House). The Governor may have (R) after his name, but he is anything but a conservative. The big city mayors are big libs, like Newsome of SF and Villaraigosa of LA (sp?). The Congressional Delegation is primarily (D) and very far left, as are both idiot Senators.
Look at the state's policies that drove it into the ground: weak immigration enforcement, generous social spending even for illegals, high taxes, high regulations, restrictive environmental and zoning regulations, highly progressive state income tax, powerful public sector unions, generous pay packages for public sector employees, restrictive labor laws.
These are liberal/hard left (D) policies that destroyed the state. It has been said that many of the state's horrific policies come from UN-elected bureaucrats in addition to the leftists in the state legislature.
It's not banning or allowing same sex marriage that drives a state into the ground.

It's still the 7th largest economy in the world, so from an economic/capitalistic point of view, it is going great.
I think the main problem seems to be the disparity of wealth - the rich are too rich, and the prices of everything are too far out of range for the Average Joe.

It's not going that well in Cali. It's a big state with some major industries that have been there for so long, so yeah the state GDP will be high. I wouldn't read much into that. A rising tide will lift all boats so, if Cali made its Economic climate favorable to business (and it is currently anything but) then it would help the situations of the poor. With its current anti-growth and anti-business policies, California is going to be in bad shape for a while.

California is a red state? What a joke! Here is the (D) treasurer of California saying that the (D)s in the legislature have driven the state into the ground and can not even reverse course as they are beholden to the special interests (public sector unions, etc.) He even admits the GOP knows more about management and financial issues than the (D)s. He says it would be a blessing if 2/3 of the legislation from the state legislature never saw the light of day!

I have said this before in the political section. To have a successful economy, you need to have a equal balance. Once you have too many conservatives, or too many liberals, you have problems.

You are right. Even the Seattle paper is filled with right wing reactionaries. If I didnt know better, it would be scary to move there.
