Yes, drain it if you're turning it off. But when I had a solar hot water on the roof it had an automatic thermostat valve that sensed the cold and circulated the water by pumping some hot water up there from the tank to keep it from freezing. Are you sure you don't have one of those? I wasn't aware of mine until it broke.

speaking of solar pool heat...when do most of you that have it first turn it on for the spring season? this is our first house with solar pool heat. we have no pool cover so wouldn't any heat that builds during the day still dissipate a lot during the still cool nights this time of year?

Yes, it does but it was free anyway!

If I really want to be able to use the pool, I turn on the solar and run it to the spa only. The spa will heat up a lot faster than the whole pool and be useable much sooner.

I turn on the solar as soon as I start seeing daytime temps hovering around 80 or so. But I really like swimming and want to get the longest season possible.
