Hey Everyone,

I have been reading the forum for a few days now, and there seems to be a lot of good advice, so I figured why not ask my questions to this informed group... So here it goes..

My husband and I are looking to move to Vegas soon from NJ.. His father lives out there and has been trying to get us to move for over a year. My husband works in the IT field and it seems talking to recruiters etc that he should have no issues finding a job.

My problem is that I work for a Multi National Electronics company doing what the industry calls "Demand Planning". I have been trying to find some type of Sales, Manufacturing or even Distribution company in the Vegas area where I could use my current skills (gathered over 10 years)... I have done a few job searches using various titles but I can't seem to find anything.. Does anyone know of any companies in the area that might fit what I'm looking for?? In order to pull this move off I really need to make a salary close to what I currently make & the only way I can see doing that is if I stay within my expertise... I thought if I had a few company names etc I might be able to do a more detailed search... So any help would be greatly appreciated...

Also on a side note... If we move we would really like to find a home thats a bit removed from the actual city... Maybe near the mountains since we love to hike, any ideas of a good area??

Thanks in advance for your help!

Every Casino...every hotel...the airport...the taxi companies...All the different convention centers...I don't know there is a business in Las Vegas that is not well into demand planning.

Ever book a hotel room here? Note the daily fluctuation in rates?

Try the HR department in virtually anywhere. They all have the capability buried somewhere.

You may run into the "local" thing. But if you are making reasonable money go for it...the well paid are immune to our standard "locals" only policy.

Thanks for the advice olecapt & Buzz123.

I thought the same thing, and maybe I'm just looking wrong, or maybe different language is used. I spent most of the morning looking on the sites Buzz123 posted and had not one hit. Using terms such as Demand Planner, Supply Chain Manager, Purchasing, Procurement, Replenishment, Forecasting, Buyer, & Inventory Control . Of course prior to the sites that Buzz123 sent (which were all great by the way) I did the usual, Monster, Hot Jobs, Career Builder etc... I must be doing something wrong... Maybe my best bet is just to find a recruiter that will know what to do with my resume.

Thanks again!

I worked for the State of Nevada Employment Security Division for several years and it drove me crazy trying to search for job listings by title since everyone has their own name for the same job. The duties might be different for jobs of the same name too. Have you Googled each hotel or hotel group to look over their employment websites? Here's the largest one.

And I guess this is the next largest.

You might try to find a legitimate head hunter but be careful, many job services are just rip offs. NEVER, NEVER, NEVER go to anyone who wants money from you to find you a job. If they are legitimate they will get their money from the employer. Anyone asks for money up front, don't walk, RUN for the nearest exit. The best way to find a job is to knock on a lot of doors and show you are interested. Almost everyone I ever hired in television was the guy who was persistant, and most important, was available when I needed someone. People don't give enough credence to being in the right place at the right time when looking for a job. The best way I know of to do that is to be there often and be a pain in the bu**. You might think that persistence will be a turn off to the employer, but when an employer needs someone they want them NOW, and all of a sudden you aren't that pest that they kept turning down, you're just what they're looking for.

You might also go to the various Temp Agencies in town. I've seen more people get jobs through Temp to Perm than through any other employment agencies. And that includes jobs at the upper end of the pay scale.

But when it comes right down to it, no one can find you a job but you.

Probably a wise idea. In the unemployment biz I ran into this all the time. Guy gives up his good job and friends back east in some industrial area of the country to move here on a whim with no prospects whatever before he got here. So I asked what did you do back in Ohio (or wherever). He says he worked in a plant. Well we don't have any plants in Las Vegas so where do you plan to look for work? (Something his state unemployment service would demand to know before they give him any benefits). Well, I want to get a job in a plant. Like I said, we don't have any plants so what's your next choice? Well, I only want to work in a plant. So I choked him.

Nearly everyone I've ever spoken to about it moved here with no job or even any idea what they'd find when they got here, and that includes me. I didn't even know that Las Vegas was in Nevada, nor did I have any clue where Nevada was. Desert? They have a desert? I thought the desert was Death Valley. Anyway, nowadays I'm much more cautious and advise people to have a job lined up before they pack up and move here.

And then tell them the next part Buzz. Lots of the employers in this town will not talk to you unless you are local. Not true for 80K and upward jobs but all the regular stuff you can't get hired unless you live here first...

Catch 22...You should not come here without a job but we won't hire you until you live here.

Wonderful place Vegas...

Hey, Olecapt:
Does what you said hold true for HVAC (heating, ventilation, AC) jobs? I'd like to think that a mature, skilled worker in this industry is eminently employable.
But, of course, I'd like to think a lot of things are true.
Thanks.

Good HVAC guys are worth their weight in gold and maybe good enough to avoid the local onlies. But don't bet on it. However they are golden here whether they get hired before or after moving. Same is true of most skilled tradesmen. But again they may have trouble without a local address.

I counsel to get a local phone number (Skype or a cell phone) and a mail drop before you start hunting here. You don't have to really be local...only look like one.
