I guess it probably gets old pretty quick is that why? Aren't there just so many things going on, new shows, comedy, restaurants? And about Fremont Street, i was under the impression it was dirty and crime-ridden. enlighten me!
The downtown Fremont Street gambling/casino area is quite safe and well patrolled. Just don't go off the beaten path. There's a lot of free parking too.

Fremont Street is old Las Vegas. Old neon, old style casinos, street artists, kitschy collectibles and souvenirs. The casinos have lower limits and it's said you get more gambling for your dollar there than just about anywhere else. There's always music and entertainment on the weekends. Lots of food bargains too and BTW, the best BBQ brisket in Vegas is at Main Street Station. The best food bargain right this minute is 12oz prime rib dinner for $4.99 at the Gold Spike.

The Gold Nugget is the best hotel downtown and you should walk in just to see the pool. It's built around a huge aquarium complete with sharks. You can go to Binions and have your picture taken with $1M for free.

It's just unpretentious fun. You probably won't see any celebs or 'shiny people' who are willing to pay $500 'bottle fees'. It's just average people. Strolling around, having a good time. There's a jerky store and 2 really good pawn shops that sell nice jewelry.

I'm not a big time gambler or an expert by any means. For me, $20 lasts 10 times longer at Fremont Street than it does at Mandalay Bay.

I love being around real people, lower class people. Twice a year I dump my penny collections into the still-existing penny slots (not electronic) at the Western on lower Fremont. Nice, real, friendly people.

Now if they'd just re-open my old hang-out, the Ukelele, on Bonanza & LV Blvd where I could rub shoulders with the homeless drinkers!
The main problem I have is the Fremont street casinos are smokey, and I absolutely despise cigarette smokers being around me. I have noticed the casinos on the south strip are much less smokey. For example, I rarely see people lighting up at the table. However, in downtown there are people smoking all over the place, which in turn ruins my night. The worst of it is when I come home, and smell like a cigarette. This has never happened on the strip, but has happened multiple times at Binion's, Four Queens, etc.

It's the same everywhere - the natives at any tourist destination tend to avoid the tourist traps.

Visit the strip four or five times a year, haven't been downtown for many years.

Been living here since November 2008, and have only been to the strip when clients are in town, and friends. Oh, and once for a friend's birthday. Other than that, I hang out at Red Rock, because it's closer to home, and you don't have to deal with the attention ***** gamblers that scream like they won a million when they only won $5.00 on that quarter machine. I do like the Strip, but I'd rather not deal with the taxi cab drivers, tourists trying to navigate and drive at the same time, and those ever so brave souls that try to run across the strip like flash gordon.

Friends and I head to the Strip 2-3 times a month. Love it!
Some of the best restaurants and bakeries in the world.
Some of the best lounges in the world.
Some of the best shows in the world.
Some of the best shopping in the world.
Not a hassle to get to (no reason to ever have to use LV BLVD: easy access to north and south ends of the strip via I-15, via Frank Sinatra, via Paradise, ...) and park (unlike traditional Downtowns).

I head Downtown whenever there is an art/literature event. About 1-2 times a month.

What generally surprises visitors is the fact that there are also GREAT, GREAT restaurants, lounges, shopping, things-to-do in the surrounding neighborhoods and suburbs. The first time friends/family visit, we do most of our social activities on the Strip. Every subsequent visit, however, I keep them off-Strip for restaurants and events. They have just as much fun.
In other words, it's not necessary at all for us to head to the Strip for a nice time, to get dressed up, ...

For me, I look at the Strip as the cherry on top of the sundae. Whereas an outsider's understanding, I feel, is of the Strip as the actual sundae for us locals. It's our Times Square or Michigan Avenue.

Worst payouts in the State. Fry's Electronics and LAS were the only times I went near the place during my 8th month tenure there.

Been here since June and have only gone to the Strip 3 times (twice because I had friends visiting) and Freemont twice (for the same reason). If I go anywhere near the Strip, it's usually Ellis Island. Otherwise, I stay close to home and go to Red Rock, Rampart, and Suncoast.

THIS is the best and most accurate answer. Having grown up in Nashville and been around country music tourist attractions, I can tell you that we avoided Fan Fare like the plague!

Rarely did we go to the Ryman Auditorium (I did actually go as a child when the Grand Ole' Opry was still playing there), stroll on 2nd Avenue (and only if my dad was with us as he always carried a gun) or lower Broadway where the famous bars are located that the likes of Loretta Lynn & Barbara Mandrel played.

No Music Row, the new (now old) OpryHouse at Opryland or any other place like Hendersonville where the 'stars' hung out. My grandfather actually built the original country music hall of fame. Guess how many times I've been inside? ZERO.

So, Kaiminani, I think you have hit the nail squarely on the head! When you live at a destination it is just not as appealing I suppose.

When my grandparents lived there they went twice a year (once for each of their bithdays) and only to Fremont because the main strip involved too much walking. They said the smoke there was a problem though.
