Yup. Banned in Pahrump. At least one of the brothels is right over the line.

There is also a big bribery scandal about a local hot joint promoter trying to bribe a council person to approve a hot spot inside Pahrump. Sounds like someone is going to jail...but in a year or two.

I would say "Sin City" is based on the idea that many sins are in excess out there. Prostitution, while not legal, is very heavily advertised and is often viewed as a possibility. Many places to gamble and make your 'millions'. Unlimited free alcohol at any casino you play in. Where else can the average person get drink after drink for free? The image of the quick marriage, or quick divorce. Even the excessive use of water by the casino's in the middle of the desert.

But hey, sin city beats out the image that my hometown of Detroit has, so I say go with it.

FYI, the resorts only use 7% of the water. Most is used by families. http://www.snwa.com/html/cons_waterfacts.html

Sin City is just a nickname like Detroit is Motor City or Motown. It isn't normally used derogatorily. Gambling was always a big part of the wild west and Nevada was one of the last frontier territories to be settled. Gambling was rampant in the old mining towns as was prostitution, shoot outs, and just about everything you ever saw in the western movies. Exactly what one would expect of an unsettled territory in the old west. Then people got to worrying about statehood and being taken seriously so they outlawed gambling. Hardly nobody lived in Nevada anyway (in 1964, when I came to Nevada, the state population was approximately 400,000; that's all there were in the 7th largest state in the country) so nobody paid any attention to that law and nobody really enforced it; so by the 1930s they decided they might as well control it and tax it, and gambling became legal. Prostitution was a necessary evil in the mining camps and ranch territories so they just let it go until they decided they could tax that too and most of the cow counties made it officially legal. There really aren't as many cat houses as you'd think around the state. Enough to satisfy the needs of a lot of lonesome cowboys, deer hunters, and over the road truckers passing through. But as Nevada chose not to be hypocritical like the other states and legalized what goes on big time in every state, we got labeled "sin" city. It was something probably started by the Chamber of Commerce and it has been a good marketing tool for the tourism industry which, if we didn't have here, the population of Nevada would be about 100,000. But I hasten to point out that there is more illegal "sin" in New York City then there is legal "sin" in the whole state of Nevada. I'm sure that New Orleans has more "sin" going on then Las Vegas too. But we should probably call it "Vice" City, or "bad habit" city, which would be more accurate.

I lived and worked in Vegas for about 3 years. The only day I didn't see a prostitute was a day I stayed home. Granted, I worked on the strip and the ones I saw were the "good" ones who hung out in the Venetian. Last I checked, there's still a pack of 'em every night at the circle bar. The lower the establishment, the nastier the hooker but they're all over the place. There are some adult clubs that cater to people who like having orgies. These are popular. Gambling, prostitution, drugs, strippers, 24hour legal drinking...it's sin heaven. I always said the Vegas motto should be "people behaving badly". It's true, Vegas is still Sin City. I saw more people vomiting out of their cars in Vegas than I have anywhere else. This covers areas far off the strip as well. The things I saw while I was there...I'll never forget it as long as I live. I moved in 2001. One of my favorite stories is about a 75 year-old hooker...Sin City is alive and well. I hope it stays that way.

Fascinating...I was in two bars in Bellagio and one in Paris one night last week about 9:00 to 11:00...saw not a single hooker. I must go to the wrong bars. I have seen people barf on the strip..I have not seen a single car barf in 11 years here. I must drive on the wrong streets.

Las Vegas certainly sells that "off color" thought. And, under some circumstances, delivers. But the average tourist is pretty much given the opportunity to eat too much, drink too much, gamble too much and spend too much money. Most resist a good part of it. And most go home happy about the whole thing and come back and do it again later.

Yeah but most of those who are behaving badly are tourists. Las Vegas captalizes on the bad behavior of people from other states. Those from the northeast and Texas are the worst.

I wasn't say they used most of the cities water, it's just that there are not very many places you visit with such expansive water displays, especially in the middle of the desert. That is all I was getting at.

Just pointing out to people who may not know that many, if not all, the resorts, such as those built by Steve Wynn like Bellagio, The Mirage, Treasure Island, and Wynn, use recycled gray water for their water features and landscaping so there is no waste of water. They actually have their own waste water treatment plants on the properties. The Muni golf courses use recycled waste water on the grass too. It is grass that uses all the water. As Pat Mulroy has said, if there was no landscaping there would be no water problem. I like to look at grass too, but it doesn't belong here. Probably WE don't belong here either, but I don't look at beautifying the place with oasis-like features as a "sin". It may be a sin to waste water in the desert on grass, especially since it is so hard on our allergies. We need to get rid of grass and sparingly put in drought tolerant plants.
