This is a spinoff from my first thread I started a few weeks ago. From Abq, ready for a new career and a change in lifestyle This is a neat story.

Well a friend of mine introduced me to a manager at a local nightclub while I was visiting Vegas after expressing my desire to move out of New Mexico. I turned in my application and resume thinking that's probably as far as it would go. Well it turns out he called me at 3am while I was having drinks at the Palms. He interviewed me the next day and offered me a Doorman position at one of the hottest clubs in Vegas.

Excited and broke, I raced back home and said goodbye to all my friends at work. One of the bartenders gave me a cell number of a former employee who long ago worked with us and is now living in LV. She told me that her friend in Vegas has a house she might be able to rent me. Severely strapped for cash since I had purchased a new vehicle the day before I flew to Vegas for the interview. I reluctantly gave her a call about what she had to offer. I wasn't expecting anything since I knew very well I couldn't afford to rent a house. Plus I already had a couple of appointments lined up with Apartment Managers to look into getting a 1 br Apt. for around $650.

Anyways, she remembered who I was after chit chatting a while. After I explained my financial situation.....I was SHOCKED when she said she would offer her home (3br, 2ba, 2cargar) at $650/mo with no lease! With the stipulation I had to move in 30 days if it gets sold. It has been on the market for the past 6 months and still no buyer.

This is a home she originally bought for $290K about 5 years ago and is now in the market for $140K. She is desperate to sell it since she has a new mortgage payment and is still making payments on the older house.
I told her I would take it of course and I start my job next week.

This goes to show that sometimes it's not what you know..it's who you know.

Las Vegas here I come!

Congratulations.

Note: In Las Vegas, as just about anywhere, it is ALWAYS who you know, much more than what you know. For all it's glitz and sprawl, LV is definitely a "small town". But the what does come in handy at times!

Good luck! Sounds like you are going to do great.

And welcome. You obviously play the people game well and that is the secret to success in those circles.

However to pay back the list for their fine advice and counsel you gotta cover..

I would think you let a couple of the list regulars penetrate a club like they belonged.

YellowSnow or MomMom or Olecapt and the Admiral or Buzz and Buzz's, Airics, Kimba, FastRudy, maybe even TonyS though he may be able to get in with money. .

want you to spread a little of that good will back this way.

Anyway welcome to LV.

I have to say it's not always who you know, since many move here, secure a job and place to live without knowing a soul. But in some circles it is who you know. Mostly casinos.

Who you know is important, also being in the right place at the right time.

Good luck in Vegas.

good for you. but its not just networking its job skills too that keep you in the game. people can be nice but that can change fast.
if you got strong skills it wont matter that they dont like you anymore.

there is a saying in Las Vegas "Money talks, bull**** walks"....it also applies to the "who you know" philosophy....Who you know may get you the job.....but the "Who" will require that you perform BETTER then ANYone else....or you're gone.
