You make some excellent points here jjameson922! Developing that respect from the animal is key in controlling the animal. I use a gentle guide leash and it has diminished the pulling on the leash greatly. I wish more dog owners would use the gentle guide leash. It is like a halter for a horse and it really controls the dog without choking him. My male knows exactly when we're going out and he's excited to let me put it on him.

I had to really work with my male to "get his attention", but the female doesn't seem as difficult. Still there is more training I need to do, but it is an on-going process. Bored dogs, particularly puppies can be a LOT of trouble. The chewing is a HUGE issue if they are left unattended in the house for long periods.

Thanks for all the suggestions!!! As I said in the beginning this will not be my first Rottweiler. It will just be my first one in Vegas. My first pet (as a young adult) was a Rottweiler. I was so HAPPY when I got her... now that I've been looking at pics and reading up I'm pretty sure she was a rott mix. She was the BEST dog and very easy to train. I got her when she was little. The 2nd Rott my mother got was a bit more of a challenge and we got her when she was much older. That is why I want to get a younger dog. I want to get it BEFORE someone else has messed it up. I did find several good candidates on petfinder.com. However the dogs at the Shelter looked to be too old for me.
If/when I get a dog my plan is to walk her (we want a female because they normally don't get as big as males) every morning before work/school. Then walk her every evening also. Plus of course dog park on the weekends.
If I get the home I want then we will be walking distance from a park and dog park so it will be PERFECT!!!
Plus I plan to do obedience classes ASAP and I’ve been reading on the Rottweiler so I’m pretty sure I know what I’m getting myself into. Last but not least my daughter is 12 yrs old and definitely a BOSSY pants!! LOL So…. I don’t think she will have any problems with the dog either. In addition to the fact that this will be our 3rd Rottweiler that is the only type of dog she’s ever had in the home.

I am a bit concerned about the leaving her home all day alone. I KNOW a bored dog = a messed up house!!! LOL I watched an episode of “Its me or the dog” the TV show on Animal Planet (I think that’s the station) probably 8-9 months ago and she built an obstacle course in the backyard for the dog. Sounded like a good idea. I was also on a website recently that suggested when you leave give the dog a special toy/treat that they can ONLY have when you leave the home. That way they will associate you leaving with getting that special treat and might not be so anxious.

What do some of you do when you leave your dog alone for work???

I really appreciate all the suggestions that everyone has given!!
