The Las Vegas is devoid of culture and arts argument is one of the most laughably incorrect criticisms of our city. Just an easy misperception to latch onto for those people who, quite simply, want to dislike Las Vegas.

Just some of the off-Strip events this month ...

Vegas Valley Book Festival in Arts District/Downtown (this Wednesday through Sunday) - look forward to this each year

First Friday in Arts District/Downtown (this Friday)

Art Walk 2009 in Summerlin (this Saturday and Sunday)

UNLV Performing Arts Center at UNLV (this weekend and EVERY weekend)

Vino di Lago Wine by the Water at MonteLago Village at Lake Las Vegas (November 21st)

And there are so many other art festivals, cultural events as well.

People who complain that Las Vegas has no "culture" or art, didn't LOOK for them. And more than likely, they wouldn't be going to the Lincoln Center, the Guggenheim or the Met, even if they lived next door to them

We had a poster on here last year sometime as I remember, complaining that Las Vegas was "uneducated" because we didn't have a ballet or symphony. As you mentioned healthpub, it was one of those who just HATED Las Vegas and was looking for something to blame their misery on.

When I posted the links to the Nevada Ballet Theater and the Las Vegas Philharmonic, they claimed that these two Las Vegas institutions must be "new" because the poster had never seen them before.

They've been around for decades, and it was because the poster had never looked for them.

Thank you for posting the links to some pretty wonderful artsy and cultural events!

Don't forget these as well

The only culture I've seen in Las Vegas has been in the dairy section of the refrigerated case at Smith's.

Just kidding!

Purpose of this thread is to point out Las Vegas IS a well-rounded city and like any other: book festivals, film festivals, art walks, ballet, symphony orchestra, ...
It's not the Strip or nothing for us, it's not party or do nothing for us, ...

HP, people have their prejudices based on a fantasy world view of what Las Vegas really is as opposed to the Hollywood version playing in their heads. They don't really have a clue. You'll get used to it, but it will never cease to offend you.
