The controller is $120, NV Energy pays $80. Homeowner pays $40. Installation for two units costs around $100. I'm sure they'll find "something" else that needs doing. We'll see. "Your subsonic dildafier needs harmonic adjustment. That usually runs $300, but we'll do it today for only $215!" It just wouldn't be an HVAC service call without an attempt at upselling.

Looks like it will take two summers to pay for itself -- I just like the principle of using ALL the cold from the coils instead of letting it dissipate outside. I do the same thing with my truck. When I'm a couple minutes from my destination, I kill the AC and crank the fan to clear the coils. It keeps me cool, saves gas, and most importantly keeps the truck from smelling like a litter box next time I turn on the AC.

(Why does it smell like a LITTER BOX??????)

I turned on the AC when I got home...the humidity is 88%. UGH. I go from drinking a gallon of water a day and chapped lips to not being able to breathe in 6 hours.

I thought I loved humidity, but maybe not! Though its great for the skin

An update on the NV Energy cooling controller. The AC guy left our house today. No controllers installed. Since our AC units are five years old, they already have the solid-state controllers, and they have the soft start fan motors.

The NV Energy rebates for fans and controllers is only useful for older AC units. (Like more than 10 years old.)

The condensation from the coils stays in the unit, then molds.

The humidity is very low here (duh), and the drain on your AC plenum is probably plugged, but there is such little water, that it doesn't leak out and make your floor wet.

But since there is just a tiny bit of moisture in the air, it condenses on the evaporator, runs down onto the floor of the plenum, and molds.

I had a moment of weakness the other day and ran the AC for the few hours. I'm ashamed of myself

I'm surprised how cool it actually stays in my house without the AC on. Right now (according to weather underground) its 91.7 in Summerlin, and even without AC, its 81 in my house. 81 is usually where I keep my thermostat in the summer, so its all good for the time being.

Do you do that in the winter as well?

I'm with you, LVD. I keep my thermostat set in the low to mid 70s year round. I wouldn't live with it at 85 even if NVE rates were triple what they are now!

I would be freezing with it at 70!
Ours is now 87 during the day, 88 when gone and 85 for sleeping. Add ceiling fans, floor fans and desk fans, and it's almost cold.
We were at Costco yesterday, and they have a giant high velocity fan for $300. I bet that thing would keep one cool, and blow all your stuff away as well.
