i have 8 tats and i have gotten them in quite a few different places (Seattle, Bangkok & Sarajevo being the majority) and I have NEVER heard of giving such a huge tip....

it depends on the quality of the work... my last artist was awesome I just need to go back to finish it up (I'm only 9 hours in) but dang he has a heavy hand... awesome tat but that much pain and im sorry but the tip goes down just a bit.

All shops are different, so prices probably vary. My last tattoo was in 2008, so they've probably gone up since then.

That's just the level that I tip at. If I like the artist my good tips help to ensure that s/he'll push themselves to do great work when I come back. One idea is to fax or email your design to some artists, and get a quote that way.

Ten minutes (make it fifteen) off the Strip puts you in reach of a good part of Vegas. Don't be afraid to explore. You'll see that we locals are pretty much the same as you tourists. We don't all live under the casinos, and we put our sequined jumpsuits on one leg at a time.

Bad Apple tattoo has some incredible artists there. Charleston between jones and Decatur. The places on the strip are concerned about making a profit, and usually won't do anything else other than flash tattoos. If you want a custom tattoo, definitely check out bad apple tattoo.

I have tattoos and I NEVER go to the strip, they tend to over price everything because tourists are the main attraction and tend to be too hasty. Diversity is a common local place and they have websites that give you backgrounds on all of their artists with examples of their work. I used to go to them for everything until my friend starting doing them for me. I know there are more great places out here, but honestly you should research the artists along with the business.

yea tipping %50 seems high. id say closer to %20. you're paying alot for the ink to being with. and the artist usually gets half of it already, other half to the house.

When people go to illuminati tattoo should they ask for by lasvegas411 or your real name?

It's hard to find a tattoo artist that you really trust. Anyone can make a portfolio (of their work or others). I have had the same tattoo artist for the past 8 years and love her work. She's become a friend of ours and I would never go to any other. She's going to be outlining a half-sleeve for me next weekend here in New England, and we're going to "pay" her in airline credits so we can fly her out to LV after we move and finish the piece. Still cheaper than what most places charge and I know the work will be excellent!

But if you don't have that one person you trust for everything, make sure you go to a person who specializes in what you're looking for (portrait, b&w, color, shading). You don't want a guy that's great at b&w sleeves working on a portrait for you. I've found from years of tattoo conventions and studying the art that a "general purpose" tattoo artist won't produce the same quality as a specialist.

Just my 2 cents from a tattoo'd freaky person
