Oh, and if you can't find a job but are set on moving here, another option would be to enroll at the local community college here. Since you have a lot of experience in restaurant industries, you could try a food service program of some sort, or if you're interested in law enforcement (?), criminal justice.

Student loans can cover costs of living, and it will buy you some time until the job market bounces back.

Be aware that a lot of other people are doing the exact same thing, though.

I can't figure out how to post a new thread as I don't have a new thread Icon so thought this was the closest and may some of you can help....I currently live in Central Oregon which is a very small town and I have been out of work for over a year and runnig out of unemployment. There are NO jobs up here and being a small town we don't have any infrastructure to supply any jobs. My son lives a couple of hours from Vegas and I could see him more so I have been considering moving to Vegas (Phoenix, Salt Lake City, Prescott are other places I have been looking into as well) I don't know anything about Vegas as far as living there, safe places to rent, I have dogs (several 5 pound Maltese and one border collie with an auto-immune problem so I probably can't find her a new home and will have to take her with) ...I don't think it would be a good idea to sell my place here and buy something in Vegas if I don't have a job etc. I am an administrative assistant (high end) and would need to find a place with a little acreage (like horse property, I used to have horses up here but had to put one down a couple of months ago and sell the other) where I might be able to get horses again if things go better but don't want to live smack in the middle of town. Are there areas, safe ones, around Vegas where I could rent something like that cheap or cheaper and what is the lifestyle like for older singles 50+ .....any ideas would be great.

jasdell,

To start a new thread just go to the section you want, in this case when you click on "Las Vegas" you see a blue box on the left that says "New thread". Just click on that and you'll be all set.

There are plenty of properties for your needs especially here in the NW; however, you probably will be looking at a foreclosure or auction property that you will have to invest in cleaning and fixing up.

Now to the jobs, it is tough. You can scour the endless threads here to find out that for every job posted at least 1,000 people are applying for it. It's not to say that you won't find a job but you should have at least 6 months living expenses while you do a job search.

As to lifestyle, there are numerous activities for all ages. If you play golf then you will enjoy it as the weather is favorable 10 months of the year, but there are other activities such as fishing, hiking, skiing, camping, shooting, etc.

I think the Las Vegas Forum needs a sticky post stating the current unemployment rate.
