Question In need of a car for 3 months...

I have been looking into attaining a car to use for 3 months while I work as an intern here in Las Vegas. Being that the area I am living is newer and less developed, there is no public transit around this area and also no one I work with living in the area. I didn't realize this issue would be such a problem until I got here. If anyone would be willing to let me borrow a car for this period of time, it would really help me out [and also give you some extra cash] or if anyone knows anything about trying to get a car for this period of time affordibly, it would be greatly appreciated! Thanks so much!

Are you putting us on? I know some people would be stupid enough to "loan" a car to a stranger for three months, but I haven't seen anyone like that on here. Jeeeez. Just buy an old clunker and when you're done with it, sell it. Are you from Nigeria? Sounds like one of their scams.

Actually buzz the US boaters in Puerto Vallarta always have a couple of cars that they hand down from one to the other...Cars are hopelessly illegal and confiscated if you catch a ticket and are slow on the bribe.

I agree though...in Vegas you would have to buy a clunker. You can get working cars here for under $600 or so. Other than that you bike to public transit. They will haul a bike as well as you.

The rental rates out there are usually so cheap that you could probably rent a brand new compact car for less than it would cost to buy a junker. Call some of the smaller rental co's and see what they'd charge you for a 3-month rental.

Actually, college students do it all the time to save money... of course it is in the Detroit area, where cars are plentiful

Careful...that was in the days of the 3 dollar steak dinner. Them is long gone. Maybe a rentawreck. But auto rentals are no longer cheap in Vegas.

The problem with that is the liability of the person who is loaning the car. The car is titled or registered under his or her name. When you let someone borrow it and that person kills someone in an accident.. the owner of that car can be sued as most people only carry minium insurance becuase of cost.

My daughter one time got carried away buying antiques back east so she bought an old truck to haul them back to Vegas. Then she sold the truck here for more than she had paid back there. I'm just saying that if you can buy an old used car, you should be able to get most of your money back in three months by selling it. You will have to buy insurance and register it, but that would still be cheaper than renting. The person renting it would more than likely charge more than the actual cost of those things.

I guess "cheap" is relative. When we were in Vegas last April, we rented a minivan for 9 days and it cost us just over $200. I rented the same minivan from the same rental car company in Atlanta for two days, and it cost me $10 more than the 9 day Vegas rental. Go figure.....

Do the sum..200/9 = 22 per day x 90 days = $1980.

And that was likely half what are intern gets charged unless he can find a rentawreck place. Tourist deals are seldom available locally.
