Hello Las Vegans, I will be moving to LV next month and I am hoping to get some inputs. I am looking into apartments/condos and some have garage, while others have covered carports. Given the hot summers, is having a direct-access car garage (cost ~150 extra per month) preferable to having covered car ports? Are the carports cooler because of ventilated air or garage cooler? Thanks.

A garage is definitely cooler, but whether it's worth $150 a month is the question. Depending on where you work, your car will most likely be out in the sun all day anyway. In apartment complexes carports are always prone to visitors taking your space. Break ins and car theft is another worry in apartments. It would be worth it to me if I could afford it to have a garage, but not necessarily because of the heat. I don't know if you could do this in an apartment complex garage, but most people living in homes around here use the garage for storage and park in the driveway.

You can't keep a beer cooler in a carport.

Then why not just use self storage for $19 a month?

because ya can't walk from your kitchen to the self storage.....I simply dont use a garage to park a car in.

[AND I don't pay $19 a month]

The use of the garage as a storage unit or for additional living space is a cherished Las Vegas custom. In some older neighborhoods well over half the places have converted the garage to something else...And of the remaining garages many are storage units not for automobiles.

So obviously you don't need a garage.

The two big positives are the comfort factor in the heat and the reduction in the probability of your car being stolen or its contents ripped off. The second can be a big item if you live in the wrong place.

I looked in lots of older neighborhoods and more than half the garages had been converted to living space. I have a 2 car garage and it is used for storage while I am working on remodeling the house. After the house is done, I hope to use the garage for parking but who knows!
