Me and my husband just got my Permanent Residency visa approved. Through the process of getting this visa, my Notary Public advised I don't change my name until after the process, or it may complicate it. Now, with the process over, I'd like to change my name to my married name.. the problem is my Visa has my maiden name on it. My legal name is still my maiden name, all my Canadian ID has my maiden name. How do I move to the USA and change my name to my married name, when all my Canadian ID, my passport, and my Visa all have my maiden name?
The easiest would be to wait till; you naturalise in 5 years, then you can get a free and easy name change. You can still use your new married name on new documents such as your US drivers license right away.
I believe there is a cost if you "just" want to change your name, but I know you get a freebie when becoming a US citizen.
Yeah, I believe the application or some document asks if you want to change your name.
