Did he admit it because he was caught, or he "just" admitted it without any suspicion being on him at the time? Fake passports are bad, but pretending to be a US citizen when you are not carries a lifetime, un-waiverable ban from the USA.

Admitted
Without suspicion
The situation is complicated
He did not have no citizenship at all
What country did the fake passport come from? The US? If so, he's got a big problem. If it's from another country the situation may be different. Either way he needs a lawyer now!

Not The United States.
Another country passport
He just wants to ask for asylum in U.S. airport
As it's not a US passport, it should not be a major issue. However, asylum cases are closely looked at, especially if he comes from a third country, ie doesn't travel directly from the country where he is alegedly prosecuted to the USA, as they will wonder why he travelled all the way to the USA before seeking asylum.

As I understand it it's not all that uncommon that refugees arrive with fake documents. Sometimes that's the only way to get out of the original country. As long as he is completely honest now he may be okay. Of course there are no guarantees. This person really needs a lawyer though.
