Start looking for jobs in California. I have no idea how the market is, or even how reasonable it would be to try from abroad. An employer can sponsor you for legal residency status, if I'm not mistaken. Or, if you have the means, you could get a travel visa for a few months and look for a job in that time.

Poor advice. I believe it may be illegal to try to procure employment while in the US on a tourist visa. I would strongly advise the OP to seek a very informed opinion before doing this.
I love Pasadena it is amazing. I am not going to be proposing straight away. We have not long started dating .
Is there no other way of me to get out to the US?
Go to VisaJourney.com : Marriage and Family Immigration to the USA (K Visa) and ask them. I'm not shilling for that site; I'm not one of the admins or anything. They're just in a much better position to give you advice than people here are as they know FAR more about immigrating to the US than people here do. I don't know all THAT much but I know more than most people here do. What does that tell you?
I'd say right offhand your options are:
F1 - student visa. Very expensive, as you'd have to go to uni to keep it.
H1-B - work permit. You have to be sponsored by an employer and all the H1-Bs for this year have already been issued.
DV - if you're from Northern Ireland, you qualify for the diversity visa lottery. If you're from any other part of the UK, you don't.
K-1 - fiance visa.
There are some other options, but like I said...this board doesn't have the appropriate expertise to guide you on this. This is more of a forum for people to rant and vent about illegal immigration as a political issue, not to give advice on the legalities and logistics of US immigration.
Good luck.
