Can anyone point me to federal and or state law that pertains to new arrivals who are minor and who are ill with a infectious disease. Specifically what I am looking for are protocols that dealt with minor children who accompanied their parents who were found to be sick with a infectious disease. I'm interested mainly the law from the late 1800s to early 1900, entering Ellis Island, NY.
This involves my Grandfather's brother (15 years old) who entered the US with his parents around 1905. What I was told is he was denied entry because of TB. He did not return to Italy but was said to have immigrated to Argentina. He may have ended up in Argentina but something is missing from the equation, I think. For example was it common practice to let sick minors to wonder off on another ship or just wonder off into NY? I doubt it. I would think quarantine would be the law. It seems his parents and siblings never saw him again.
