IMHO: this country is worse off overall compared to 1965.

We as a nation was in the midst of dismantling the Jim Crow laws, cracking down of excessive alcohol consumption, women's rights (read that not having to stay in abusive relationships, etc), our overall birthrate was plummeting and so on.

The biggest thing I miss from back then, reading about it in history books and vintage movies/TV shows was that the 'working man' had a genuine shot at Middle Class life.

Good Gawd nooooooooo.Im already being told I'm a raciest, bigot, ignorant, red neck, no toothed, hillbilly who is married to my sister, because I wont learn spanglish (actually I do know it)
I shudder to think how further my sensitivities will be bruised, my ego altered, and my inner self in conflict, should I resist the call to learn MANDARIN
( note to the uninitiated<<<<<I'm really not in touch with my inner self, so don't waste your or my time arguing that point)

Why do Mexicans have such a bad rap when it comes to immigration?

Gee lets see......

They do it ILLEGALLY
They do NOT learn ENGLISH most of the time
Once they are here they have WAY TOO MANY KIDS
Statistically Latinos are far more likely to DROP OUT of school.
Immigration of Mexicans leads to more members of the Norteno and Surreno gangs.

My folks came here from an Eastern country LEGALLY.
They learned English before coming here.
My parents BELIEVED IN BIRTH CONTROL.
They do NOT believe that everyone here should cater to their English deficiencies.

I personally think we need to limit all immigration numbers for all groups. Letting more Asians in will cause too much competition among higher paying jobs, therefore causing wages to go down. Colleges are already filled with MANY ambitious and eager students; moreso than any other generation. We have enough super minds. The last thing we need is more super minds.

Super minds don't necessarily mean super people.

Default well...

The U.S. is still growing slowly because of slow immigration. Had there been no immigration, the U.S. will go downhill:

2/3 of science and Ph.D. students are Asian. In particular, 2/3 of maths Ph.D. students are Chinese. If Americans don't want Asian immigrants, could they please watch less TV and study more science? I was a high school exchange student in the U.S. for a year and I was appalled by their quality of education. In China you need to know the American equivalent of Calculus 3 and University Physics to get into college. When in college, the first maths class is often not calculus but linear algebra. Chinese students study from 7 a.m. to 12 a.m. or 1 a.m. everyday from grade 6 until whenever they finish their education; the kids in my American host family spend only 1-2 hours a day on homework, then they go to church or hang out or watch movies or whatever. They showed me their textbooks - be they science, literature, or history - and I thought the books were such a joke. We would have learned their AP Calculus BC back in 11th grade and my English grammar is definitely much better than theirs. One kid was 17 years old and he could not appropriately use "its" and "it's" however hard I tried to explain to him.

For comparison - 93% U.S. students major in business, psychology, arts, and all that stuff. 60% Chinese students major in maths, physics, chemistry, biology, engineering, etc.

If YOU had to go through the immigration process, your ideas of a "free country" will immediately break down. To get a student visa I had to read 200+ pages of information and bring 100+ pages of forms and documents to the visa interview. To schedule the visa interview costs a few dollars. The visa costs about $ 120. Then an information system about foreign students cost another $ 100. If there were such draconian fee structures for U.S. citizens, there would be a revolt.

Good, Asians are adept at Science and math. Let them knock their socks off in their endeavors, dreams and aspirations, but in their own countries. We have alot of Americans here who deserve the chance to be mentored and groomed into these fields, who would otherwise be wasted doing pointless occupations, like massage therapy. Everybody from outside this country as well as the people who represent and stand to gain from their entry has no right to tell us and basically force upon us what we should think is best for our country. We can decide that for ourselves, trust me, we have the ability to do so, (conundrum)-----or why would you have such desperation to come to our lands. America is FULL. Hell, the whole world is full if not too full. So calm down and live your lives. Very moderate migration exchange is fine and we should have the freedom to travel and visit any place on the planet. But this global village Mod Cut serves only economic interests, which serves what exactly. 1000 years from now our ancestors will be so pleased to see that in the 21st century we where able to make alot of money by exploiting cheap labor. The Century of Greed this will be.....

Lot's of countries with little to no immigration aren't falling apart as you are insinuating.

Korea
Chile
Taiwan
Japan
Austria

America will always be fine, we always find a way. That is why you want to come here isn't it? You and millions more. Americans don't back down and never give up. We ain't going no where. Sure, China can believe they will rule the world in 50 years, but I guarantee you they will never and I mean never rule the United States of America. We are no Rome, because we are constantly reminded of how scared Mod Cut we should be by our leaders. We will also steal the top .1% of the people on this planet to work for us, because we can pay them and everyone wants to live here. Who wants to live in China? So you see, we will always be on top, forever. It is quality not quantity which will decide who rules the future of this planet. All 1 million of those awesome republican guard and regular army guys in Iraq learned that in an instant.
