So, Japan will be a smaller, hopelessly over-aged country. Who will pay the pensions and health care for all those old people? There will be increasing social inequalities and poverty, and eventually social unrest among Japanese.
I think the better way is to welcome and integrate immigrants. After all, it is only immigrants who come for money only who will not integrate. But when someone feels welcome they are much more willing to integrate.
Same goes for Europe. the problem is that many immigrants only come here for money, but they are not welcome, and they know it. Thus they stick together in certain parts of town, where poverty and crime increase, instead of getting spread evenly all over the continent and absorbed.
The only problem I see with immigration is religion, specifically Islam. Muslims have such a different mindset that basically they would have to give up Islam to a certain extent and accept that the unbelievers' laws of their new countries are above their Koran, and only few Muslims are willing to do that.

I have read about the difficulties regarding the assimilation of the Muslim immigrants in Europe. Contemporary European culture and Islam simply don't go together. I just read up about how Muslims aren't even allowed to use dogs in the event of blindness, let alone own one. The Muslim population in Europe is booming and the European population is going the same direction as Japan. The variables in that equation will probably not have a good result down the road.
The solution to Japan's pension problem is simple. Raise the retirement age. It won't make people happy, but it might be a happier alternative to them than letting in uneducated immigrants.
Islam in Europe: Amsterdam: More Muslims, less dogs

Hehe, dogs, never thought of them in that context
The problem with raising the retirement age is that I doubt there are enough jobs for 70-year-old people in an extremely technological country such as Japan.

Islam is simply not compatible with modern society. I would rather live in any nation with any other religion but Islam.
