I have been looking at homes in Allentown and out of curiousity I wanted to see how cheap I could get. There seem to be a bunch of rowhouses for $30,000. I am just wondering, do people actually live in these places? Is this just an absolutely horrid neighborhood or something? I can't imagine a house that cheap.

yeah, there are. they are probably in terrible parts of the city and the houses are probably run down.
you can also find 30k houses in wilkes barre and Hazleton. It isn't that uncommon, but your neighbors may not be ideal.

The above poster is correct. Many are investor-owned properties that went into foreclosure. They tend to be in the worst neighborhoods of Allentown, and need lots of work to be habitable. Even if you can get a tenant in there, your chance of getting paid consistently is slim. In an idea world, they should be bulldozed.

You get what you pay for.

There are some really nice row houses on 8th street in the historic district. Too bad they are within the less desirable section of Allentown.

I remember when the historic district was nice. How times change. At least Allentown still has the West End.

It is such a different world from where I am living now. I am near the beach in NC, and if a house is getting run down looking, the city will up their taxes or just flat out take the place and mow it down and start over. There are no buildings that are old here. Allentown has so many beautiful homes. I would think the city would do like Wilmington, NC. Move the folks living in those rowhouses all to one area, tear down the other, and put up new buildings.

Allentown is a city that is dealing with hard economic problems and the city just doesn't have money to, "Move the folks living in those rowhouses all to one area, tear down the other, and put up new buildings." They do not have tourists coming in with money or investors lining up to chip in, or new companies to replace the old ones that have moved out. It's just not good. They are trying, but there is no quick fix.

^^^ This
Although they did tear down that god forsaken third world HUD housing development, Hanover Acres, and build new houses. Although that was probably mostly federal money.

What would you say the minimum is for an inhabitable rowhome (liveable, not nice) in a non-ghetto area?

You could probably get a row home, 13th street or higher(higher street numbers in allentown = nicer) for around 60-70k. This is a guess though.
