We are planning a move from New York City by this summer and we've narrowed our choices to a small development near Penns Grant or to the town of Nazareth- These are two very different choices, I know, and I'm wondering what people's thoughts are about the two-

We love the small town feel of Nazareth, but we've heard that the people can be quite insular and wary of outsiders, and this is a major concern for us since we are a young and growing family with a toddler- The development seems like a safer but much less interesting bet-

What are your thoughts? I would love any feedback at all- Thank you!

Lower nazareth is where you would want to be. Thats where most people are moving to. Also thats right on the edge of nazareth, also the area right by forks township and palmer, along route 248. I'm not sure what that actual area is called but its pretty good as well. If you go to google maps, the area i'm talking about is from Georgetown, hanoverville Rd, and newburg Rd, look east to newburg and hecktown all the way to 248. North east of Nazareth commons(Nazareth commons is a decently sized shopping center with a lot of brand new stores) is also growing, you'll find a lot of modern suburban developments in there with various price ranges.

Most of the region you are describing is in "Lower Nazareth Township". As you get more than a mile south of route 33 on 248 you are in "Palmer Township".
Of this survey on median house prices conducted by Lehigh Valley Planning Commission you see that Lower Nazareth is one of the most expensive municipalities in the Valley.

Thanks for the responses. We've actually realized that cookie cutter enclaves are not necessarily for us, so have ruled out the cul-de-sac. We are leaning towards buying in Nazareth because we are looking for an older home with character in a small walkable town. Coming from the city, I cannot see myself turning too car dependent (nor would I like to) and Nazareth seems to have small markets, the post office, the Park, etc. all within walking distance. I'd like to not have to use the car on a daily basis and still be able to have a life with my two-year-old. On paper, Nazareth looks walkable except . . . I did not notice very many walkers . . .

A friend has suggested Bethlehem as a better alternative. Any thoughts or comparisons?

I think you'll find more walkers in the Spring everywhere!

There's a big difference between Nazareth and Bethlehem. I think though, it's a matter of your comfort zone. I would personally rather live in a small town then a small city, but that's JMO.

New York City to Nazareth. That's gonna be SOME culture shock.
(Yep, in Nazareth you will do EVERYTHING with your car.)

We moved from NJ to Nazareth (Bushkill Township - which is the northernmost township of the 3 in Nazareth) and we absolutely LOVE it here. I cannot say enough positive things about our area. I have to disagree with the pp about Lower Nazareth being the more desired area within. All 3 are beautiful areas, but we actually chose Bushkill twp for it's more rural feel and the fact that it is closer to the mountain. I think Nazareth as a whole is just beautiful and you can't go wrong with any particular area here. The schools are top rated here in Nazareth and so far have proven to be just that. We are 35 years old with 2 children, 3 and 5. I work in NYC but since moving have cut down my hours to part time and it works just fine. Takes me about an hour and a half to get to the Holland Tunnel via 78. Not too bad considering it took me an hour from NJ. And to be quite honest, the town is very welcoming of outsiders. I'd say that 80% of the people that I meet here are from out of town. For instance, I live in a subdivision of 11 homes and only 2 are local. The rest of our neighbors are are from NJ (6 families!), Texas, Rhode Island. my daughter's soccer coach coincidentally is from the next town over from us in Monmouth County, NJ. We have never been happier and feel that this was the best decision we could have ever made. Like I said, I have nothing but great things to say about our town.... Nazareth ROCKS! : )

Kelli, it is so good to hear that you felt that you have made the right move. I also like the Bushkill area because of the rural feel and larger lots.

disagree about large lots in bushkill

that mentality is taking over all the land and resulting in nothing but giant ugly lawns that no one even uses.

im sure there are good things about those communtiies, but i've just never seen how the positive it outweighing the negative. As an educated person with a perspective on both sides - i think that the NJ and NYC people don't flly realize that although bushkill is more natural than NYC - to us long time nazarene's only see all our beautiful country land being taken over by giant cookie cutter houses! gotta look at both sided

if i ever move back to the area long time i think i will run for office in one of the townships in northern northampton county and fight for farmland and people rights and such

ps the whole universe can be found walking around nazareth borough raise a kid there and they will tel ya. only downside is that the kids who are the children of the rich NJ people tend to be much terribly meaner than any other kids i have ever met in my life - i had the misfortune of being one of in the like....10 percent of middle class kids in my school class of 90%upper middle class kids whose mommys and dadys bought mansions on empty mortages and who thought they were kings and queens. glad i got the hell out when i did! please no one take this personally or the wrong way - there is academic truth in the correlation between the way children treat eachother and the the type of families they come from

I'm 90% certain that I'm moving to Lower Nazareth. The area seems nice for a young family (which we are) and the Nazareth Area School district is good.

P.S. We also moved from NYC (via Philly).
