so, from what i am reading, it appears easton is not a good place for a family? we will be relocating to the lehigh valley soon and wondered about easton. we are looking for a great community in PA with a reasonable commute to NYC.....any advice?

I live in Forks and really enjoy Easton. I'm glad we moved here and I think it's a great place to raise a family.

Stay away from Easton. Yes the downtown area has a couple of nice places to dine but not much more. The urban area surrounding the downtown area is...well , an urban area. If thats what you are looking for ok. Now as far as that commute to NYC thats another story. Depends where you are in the Easton area and where you are going to in NYC but figure 2 to 2 1/2 hrs from easton to NYC during commuting hrs. On Fridays figure 3 hrs for the afternoon commute. Rain or snow adds more time.

Are you sure about those commute times? I've made it from the Scranton area to NYC numerous times doing just over the speed limit in just over two hours. Easton is undoubtedly much closer to NYC than Scranton, is it not?

I've taken the Bieber bus to NYC from Hellertown (about 10 miles WEST of Easton) and have arrived at Port Authority within an hour and a half. Perhaps jjj is referring to getting to Brooklyn or some place farther out??

I completely hear you karen_s. We were so close to signing a contract for a house around the corner from the strip club, but I couldn't bring myself to do it knowing that my son rides his bike all the time, and I didn't want him "riding" over there...plus, there's a sketchy part of Easton not too far from there too. What a shame. Funny how one egg can ruin the batch at times. I liked most of Wilson too, and the schools.

Just giving the time it takes to get into the city during rush hour. If you leave Easton area figure the time it takes to get to rt 78. 10 min. Now from Easton rt 78 is clear until about mile marker # 8 approaching Jugtown mountain where it will slow due to tractor trailers slowing down climbing the hill. Now after that take into consideration heavy volume and sun glare slowing the trafffic to stop and go to a crawl it now totals about 45 min plus just to get to the rt 287 interchange. Now another 25 to 35 minutes to get to the NJ turnpike to head north or south to the GWB or one of the tunnnels. @0 min to one of those locations and then 15 to 20 minutes to get across the river into NYC. Now you are up to 1 hr 50 to get to the city and you havent delt with traffic to get to your job location. Rain will atleast 30 min to this time and forget snow. I basically didi this trip for 5 years and every year rt 78 got worse. Did I mention that if somone pulls off the road for for a problem, rubber necking causes the road to come to a stop. Forget about the once or twice a week accident that delays you. Yes, on a Saturday its an hr and 45 min by bus but that is with absolutely no traffic. All in all on a normal commute which was driving 10 min over the bridge into NYC it took me 2 plus hrs each way problem free. Fridays leaving the city at 4 pm I would get home around 7pm. Thats waiting in traffic to get out of the city and then the crawl home on rt 78.

househuntinginPA will become famous soon enoughhousehuntinginPA will become famous soon enough
Well, njbuyer, ( I am after all,"househuntinginPA") I have to tell you that this week we put in an offer on a house in downtown Easton. We talked the whole thing to death, and decided to go on a leap of faith. We will not know if this was the right decision, but sometimes you just have to go with your gut and take a chance. Change really starts with just one person at a time taking that chance, and that's how cities can turn around. We were quite taken with the architecture and rich history of the city. There are great restaurants, shops, and diversity. It wasn't too long ago that people were afraid of commiting to a sale in Bethlehem...look how that city has changed. Easton has great potential, an affordable housing market, and proximity to LVI airport.

Let's see if our offer is accepted!
