Cherry Square is a modest shopping center in borough of Northampon. It has a Subway, Hair Saloon, Chinese Restaurant, Family Dollar, National Auto Stores, and a Redner's Warhouse Market and 4 empty storesfronts.

The first Subway in Northampton County opened in 1985. Another one opened on 4th St. in South Bethlehem within a year. There are now 22 in the County, with the last three opening near St. Anne's Church, in Nazareth, and near the Bethlehem Wegman's where the Rite Aid closed (next to Weiss).

There have now been numerous news articles about how this chain has surpassed McDonald's in worldwide locations. Since entering Canada in 1986, it's per capita penetration has now exceeded the USA. The chain is doing particularly strong in Australia and New Zealand, but they boast almost 40,000 locations in over 100 countries, most of which are outside of the English speaking world.

Admittedly a US location doesn't make as much money as chains that serve cooked food. A Chick-fil-A earns six times as much per location.

Top 50 quick-serve brands for 2010 sorted by Average Sales Per Unit (in thou. per year $0,000)
$2,694.40 Chick-fil-A

$452.00 Subway*

My question is really why do you need this chain? Lunch meat is basically easy to prepare snack food. It at least requires dirtying pans and some effort to make hamburgers, pizza or fried chicken.

If you live in the Lehigh Valley do you eat at this chain? If so, when? Do you think of the food as healthy?

I don't really like sandwiches in general and have probably had less then 6 subway sandwiches in my life. I agree that making sandwiches is easy and no reason to spend money on having someone else do it for you. We've had them on vacation, but that's about it. I'd rather go to local places instead of chains if I can help it.

Simple, Subway has the reputation of being healthy (I just saw an article about Jared and how in his fifteen(!) years as spokesman he's made about 15 million).

My feeling on fast food in general is that it's a low risk endeavour: for better or worse you know what you'll be getting regardless of your geographical location. It's likely to be slightly cheaper than the local place as well.

Also, many people are, for whatever reason, incapable of planning to pack a meal ahead of time, even if it's as simple as a sandwich.

There was an article about 2 years about business plans for 100 montaditos, a Spanish chain that planned to open 4,000 American stores in the next five years.

The plans seem to be seriously optimistic, because today they seem to have 10 (11th under construction) in Florida, 1 in Bethesda MD, and 1 in New York City. Menu is here!

My guess is that they seriously underestimated the difficulty and cost of getting licenses to serve beer and sangria in the USA. While their sandwiches are $1, $1.50, $2, $2.50 apiece with beers for $2, $2.5, and $3 they may face serious competition from Taco Bells.

When I look at the menu for 100 montaditos, I think that here is inexpensive food that I would have trouble making at home. If only because it is harder to stock your refrigerator with manchego cheese, iberico ham, and calamari not to mention making patatas bravas.

But the chain that is increasingly spreading around the world, and here as well, makes mostly pretty run of the mill sandwiches. About as exotic as it gets is to toast the bread.

You used to buy ready made sandwiches at grocery stores and corner stores.

Subway is my "go to" if I need food in a massive hurry. I don't get the subs though, only salads for me. They are loaded with protein and veggies and the cost is quite reasonable for the amount of food.

My oldest son says his major draw to Subway is the ability to literally watch them make the food in front of him, and to make special requests and tweaks as they go. Chipotle and Moe's are like that, and those chains are two of my son's other favorites. He is on the autism spectrum and once he finds something he likes, he wants it exactly the same each and every time.

I suppose that they are not useless. It is annoying to make a salad for yourself every day and put it in tupperware.

I am a little surprised at how much they have been embraced in Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. It seems like the concept is not that difficult, and they would prefer home grown chains or local shops.

But the same can be said about the Lehigh Valley and local cafes and or grocery stores.

People are brainwashed by the Media to visit chains. All in all they offer processed food loaded with high fructose corn syrup and other unhealthy chemically enhanced ingredients. I encourage everyone to buy local. If you see a Subway and Frank's deli next door, you go to Frank's deli. Down with the chains and Gangster Capitalism! Snowden is a hero!!!

dirkd.webs.com The revolution has started!

Frank's is a place in Freemansburg and Quakertown. Is this the place you are talking about?

Just looking at the order in which they were built (for Bethlehem area), you can see it started out as an urban option. Gradually as marketing improved and the image went up they moved into the suburbs

It's all marketing. Now they are billed as "healthy food" and they are in wealthier areas.

Personally, the only reason we go to Subway is because there is NO PLACE in Carbon County that sells very good hoagies. You can get the standard stinky Italian hoagies but pretty much every sub shop near us sells the exact same menu. I don't like chains at all but unfortunately when you live in the suck hole that is Carbon County you don't have many choices. Jim Thorpe has a few good restaurants but not many original types of take out places. We still can't figure out why no one in Jim Thorpe opens good ethnic restaurants, unless it's just because they could only stay open during the weekend when the tourists come, but I digress.

Anyway, that's why we get Subway sometimes. Because we don't have many other options for fresh subs/hoagies that aren't sopping with grease.
