Albert Street is in southern part of the City of Allentown near the Salisbury Township border. There is a section of Salisbury towns (over 1.5 from Emmaus avenue to Interstate 78) that is heavily wooded and contains South Mountain and all the TV towers.

This 200 pound one year old bear came out of the woods and was running around on the city streets. The Game control didn't catch it, but it ran back into the woods.

1) Do not look the bear in the eye.
2) Never turn your back to a bear; if safe to do so, slowly walk backwards.
3) Don't lay down and stare at the ground.
4) Pick up small children, (so they do not run, scream or panic).
5) Talk calmly and quietly so the bear can identify you as a human. Bears do not have the best eyesight.
6) Very slowly move your arms out so as to appear bigger.
7) If a bear charges then stand your ground and hold as still as possible without making eye contact. Don’t even take half a step backwards. Most of the times a charging bear will veer off.

You can't outrun a bear, and if you run you are going to trigger his predator instincts.

These same rules apply to a lioness. A lioness is a carnivore, but a bear is more interested in plants. A friend of mine was charged by a lioness in Namibia. They veer off because they have no instincts about stationary potential prey. They don't reason that you are vulnerable, their instincts simply shut down.

He said when you get back to camp and the adrenaline kicks in you feel as if you have just taken the most powerful drug in your life. You can't even sit down.

The bear seems to have come out of the woods on the opposite side, and is now on Oakhurt Rd. This road runs along the boundary of Salisbury Twsp and Upper Saucon Twsp and comes within 1000' of The Promenade Shops.

Bears can run 1000' in much less than a minute at full speed. That's why you can't outrun a bear.

There should be a nice selection of bear food at the Shops if he stops in for a bite.

Lotsa Bears here in Philly.

Especially on Bear Night at The Bike Stop Bar.

Isn't there a Bear Night at the Stonewall/Moose Lounge?

Photo of Bear in William's Township Last Month

While it is not particularly shocking to see a bear wander onto a street in a township in the Lehigh Valley, it is unusual to see one inside the city limits.

ROFL!!

Being from Wyoming County, I always find it amusing how the Lehigh Valley news reports whenever a bear is seen in a neighbor. For us, it was just another day ending in "y." Even seeing them in populated areas, like near Keystone College, was NBD.

For that other type of bear... well, you'd have to go to Scranton to Club Buzz or the Silhouette back in the day. Both are now closed.

Yep! The black bear was down east of South 4th St not far from Emmaus Ave.

Later the bear was seen in Upper Saucon at someones front door.

Poor bear has been wandering around Upper Saucon for about a week now. I hope they can catch it soon and release it in a heavily wooded area. Upper Saucon, PA Patch - Local news, community, sports, shopping, restaurants, things to do

He was a professor at Cornell. He said to me that when you see something with a paw the size of your head, you truly know primeval fear. The adrenaline rush is so strong that you feel like you are going crazy.

He was counting forest elephants with a microphone system.
