I honestly need some blunt, no b.s. advice on my decision to move from NJ to PA. My new job is based in Stanhope, NJ. I have done my research and am aware of the obvious dangers that lurk around, but basically, I want a extra room, yard, and an affordable place that I don't have to sacrifice too much to have, for my wife and daughter. I have looked in Northampton County somewhat, but want to avoid some questionable statistics I have found about these areas.

I take it you are debating about the (33 miles from Stroudsburg to Stanhope) vs the (31 miles from Bangor to Stanhope).

That region of Northampton County is called the Slate Belt, and it has only 35000 people. You must drive as there are no buses. Expect little demographic diversity as it is whiter than Maine. That 31 mile drive will be surprisingly tough unless you commute at odd hours.

There are some fancy developments aimed at people like yourself. The borough of Portland is surprisingly upscale as people find it easy to get to I80.

Northampton Crossings, (3768 Easton Nazareth Highway, Easton, PA 18045) with Wegman's, movie theaters, and other shopping was developed to cater to upscale people moving into the area.

I think you are better off than Stroudsburg (aka The Bronx with trees).

Meh, I wouldn't call Stroudsburg the Bronx with trees, OP. I live in the Poconos, and while I wish I could live in the LV, my reasons are more to do with schools than with feeling like I'm in the Bronx.

Stroudsburg has its pluses. If you're commuting back to NJ, the commute is going to be easier. Commuting from Bangor would be the pits -- it could be a long drive to get to a highway, depending on where you area. And I've always found the area rather depressing. Schools in that specific area aren't that good, either.

That said, the commute, if you work 9-5, is not easy no matter where you look.

Suggest spending some time out here, even staying a week at a hotel, to see if you can hack the drive.

If you're not completely horrified at the end of the week, you can start looking at specific areas.

In terms of percentage growth from 1950-2010 the two highest growth counties in PA have been Monroe and Pike county as New Yorkers and New Jersey people began looking for cheaper housing. The impetus was the construction of the two bridges in 1953 and the interstate. The nickname "Bronx with Trees" is not really fair, but it is fairly common.

While the Delaware Water Toll Bridge and the Portland- Columbia Bridge were built at the same time they did not have an equal effect. The small towns in Northampton County (i.e. Slate Belt) did not grow in population, but are probably smaller than they were in 1950.

Northampton county was fairly urban in 1950 and has grown only 60% in the 60 yars since the highways were built. Monroe county is 5 times the population.

The best school districts in Northampton County are Nazareth Area and Saucon Valley. But they are a long drive to where you work.

The more urban areas of the Lehigh Valley feed into Interstate 78.

I have advised people to check into Value Place for a week for $169 and try the drive for 5 workdays. You can try different routes and get a feel for what it might be like to do every day.

For Northampton County and good school district, I would look towards the north end or right off Rt. 33. I have no idea about the commute to North Jersey though.

About 40 miles by back roads to avoid traffic jams on Interstate
Route 1002 from Nazareth
Take State Rte 1004 to US-46 E in White
Follow US-46 E to Flanders Rd in Netcong 22.5 mi
Follow Flanders Rd, Furnace St and Kelly Pl to Plane St in Stanhope 0.7 mi
Stanhope, NJ
