West bethlehem is next to Allentown. It is clean, quiet and safe. You can find a reasonbly priced apartment. Stay away from the Allentown schools. Also south Bethlehem is not a great area.

I lived a short while in Austin 25 years ago and I found it a hassle to get around even then. It wasn't my favorite city. For price and safety why don't you consider one of the many small towns around the Lehigh Valley? Nazareth, Emmaus, Pen Argyl, or Northampton come to mind. I don't know specifics about the schools or crime but I would at least ask for info from people here who might know. You might find a reasonable older home and a decent school in a safe area with you communting a bit for a job.

Absolutely! Some of my closest friends are Realtors and we have used a Realtor for every house we have bought and sold. I actually think that once you settle on a School District you should find a Realtor pronto to help you get the perfect home. I'm glad Jeff posts on this board and new people can feel free to get in touch with him, privately, if it's about certain listings or interest in a Realtor.

There's a line one can't cross on this board regarding advertising and I know it must be tough for Jeff not to cross because he surely knows the answers, and that's when it gets tricky. Good thing there are PM's. I think we all appreciate his presence here.
