Where Exactly in this forum does Carbon County Fit
WEll.. I'm a little perplexed.. here's why
Lehigh valley are is described as the Easton, Bethlehem and Allentown area. Lehighton in Mahoning Township in Carbon County is 30 miles from that area and my new house is 3 miles from Jim Thorpe.
Does my new "home" fit into the Lehigh Valley area?
OR.. is it considered North East Pa.. since we are close to where the Poconos are..
I feel as if Carbon county is sort of in the middle and can go either way.. can you guys enlighten me. . just wondering

I am pretty certain you would be considered part of NE PA. I think the boards have it set up that way too, if you wanted to look for info.

It seems that whenever someone asks a question about Lehighton or Jim Thorpe on this board the people who answer it are people from the Northeast PA board that just pop down here. Most of us that post on this board regularly are not real familiar with that area. I personally consider Carbon county outside of the Lehigh Valley, although according to wikipedia it IS part of the LV.

I've lived in various parts of Carbon County all of my life. I've never heard people claim that we're part of the Lehigh Valley, although I grew up in Northern CC. Most people consider CC to be part of the Poconos/NEPA. Living in Palmerton though, I do feel more a part of the Lehigh Valley than the Poconos. If that makes any sense!

Thanks for the responses.. it's a little confusing.LOL.. When I went searching for homes I stayed in Bethlehem and it feels close enough to that area for me to consider it sort of part of that area..
But then we're also close to the poconos. When my husband went to check on our rental he had to stay in a hotel because we had no beds there yet and staye at a place nearby in Carbon that hada Poconos paper. But when I looked on the map the Poconos (in the paper) was highlighted in yellow and our area was outside of that yellow area...
It's always a little confusing moving to a new area and getting to know it's nuiances (spelling?) but fun. For example, my address is in "Lehighton" but I'm actually in Mahoning Township.. which was very confusing.
Anyway.. I like the idea that Carbon County straddles both the Lehigh Valley Are AND the Poconos.. I get to benefit from both areas.
Looking forward to being a pennsylvanian!

Summit Ridge- Mahoning Twp/Lehighton
Hi everyone,
I haven't figured out how to do a new post so I hope this is OK. I am from NJ and we were looking at a home in Summit Ridge which is a new development by Grant Homes. I would like as much information as possible about the area. Is this a nice place to live? I notice some run down buildings in the area. How are property values holding up?
Is it hard to get a job? My husband has a job but my daughter and I would be looking for a job. Also looking for good colleges.
What is the weather like there?
What are good places to shop?
Thank you for any help.

Jersey girl, to start a new thread start here http://www.city-data.com/forum/pennsylvania/ and look for the little button that say's "new thread" and click that.
In answer to your question - Yes, the job market is tight, but having no idea what area your husband is looking for, it's pretty much impossible to answer correctly.
Lot's of colleges in the Lehigh Valley - 6 four year colleges and two community colleges plus a PSU campus all within 30 minutes of Allentown and Bethlehem.
We have stores.
Weather - similar to NJ.

Jersey girl I live on that street. As a matter of fact I jog through the little developement all the time
it's great here. You ate on the edge of where themore rural areas start so itsnice and quiet. You will be in lehightonffvbh schoolsi beleive and they are about average (70 a d 80th ) percentile. It is beautiful here.you are only 20 min from just about every store you'd need o. Mcarthur road in Whitehall. There is a beautiful mall there. Your also very close to Jim thorpe where there is tons to do and art galleries, theater, shops, excellent restaurants, miles of hiking and biking trails . Your also very close to skiing at blue mountain. There is acountry club on the sameroad as summit ridge. There s also Pennsylvania peak, mauchchunkoperahouse chunk lake andso much more. Work you would have to go to Allentown about 30 min or you couldfind a biz for yourself here. I love it

This article in Statemaster states it is in NEPA.........
I always thought of Carbon as very rural. But, like the town I live in now.........you are able to get to
larger towns within a half hour or so. It certainly has a better tax structure then Monroe Cty, or Lehigh.

I consider Carbon Co. to be part of the Poconos because the terrain is rugged and it is rural. Blue Mountain is the dividing line between the Poconos/NEPA and the Lehigh Valley. You seemingly enter another territory.
