Default Elimination of 80% of school districts?

Did anybody see this news?

State budget plan calls for elimination of most school districts

Gov Rendell wants to cut the number of school distrcits from 501 to 100. Lehigh Valley districts would be consolidated into 2 or 3, down from 17.

We don't have kids at the moment but, I can't possibly think this will go through without opposition. The scary part is that even if two proposals that the Board of Education is putting together gets shut down, they could still move ahead with the consolidation anyways.

I wonder if this would be just an administration change, or if the effects will be felt all the way down to the students (i.e. where they would go to school)

I wonder what would happen to high school athletics?

Any thoughts?

Wow! My paper is still in it's box down my steep driveway - I'm waiting for the mail to come so I can get both at once. I almost wish I was working today because my library is warmer then my house!

Back to the article... We've got some pretty strong teachers unions in PA. I don't think they will let it happen. I'll be watching this with interest.

If this goes threw they would have to build the schools bigger. I can say that alot of kids go to school and they do not learn and they do not plan to get jobs when they get up of school. It is a waste of our tax paying money.I say if they get bad grades , In gangs, bullies and do not plan to work when they get out of school. Then do not let go to school. Maybe they could make schools just for them. find all the good kids and put them together in a school. we have been way to soft and it has been costing alot of money for many years. No wonder there is money problems..

Sunshine, So you are suggesting that the kids that misbehave should be kicked out or go to a bad kids school? There are already alternative schools in place. I'm not sure what that has to do with consolidating of school districts. From the way I understand it, it's not about closing schools as much as combining administrations and school boards.

. all i am saying that is is costing alot of money to send kids to school if they will do use what they learn in a good way. I think that consolidating school districts is a good thing. where i live at they have 3 high schools. They could have one and make that school bigger. when i went to school. They had one school and 2 towns went to it. I think that iwas talking about big cities that have alot of crime in it. Teachers come to school to teach not to be afarid for their lifes to teach kids that will not use what they learn. they should build more alternative schools and i am saying that bad kids go to bad kids school. why should good kids put up with them. I am talking about someone who gets in trouble alot. I am not talking about kids that made a few mistakes. I have a son who is a alternative school and i talk to him all the time to be a good person. Alot of bad kids are bad because of their parents do not want to spend time with them and teach them.

It is all but a done deal with the state having such full education power, and the only mass job extinction in my opinion will be the administrative ones, leaving what little we have for more classroom teachers and their teaching aides anyway..

They will use the success of mega districts like Central Bucks as the poster child example; although these are probably the schools which will be most affected as funding is further shifted towards technical schools and more online academic courses.

The insanity of the past few years in the northern bucks county disputes made this inevitable..
