My husband and I are considering relocating to the Lehigh Valley area. My husband would be working at St. Luke's in Bethlehem and I am a teacher. I hear that there aren't many teaching jobs in PA in general, so I am considering looking for a job in New Jersey and commuting. Can anyone reccomend nice communities to live in that are commutable to NJ and Bethlehem? We are looking for something between $160,000 to $200,000.

You might want to look in the Saucon Valley/Quakertown area, both are easily accessible from I-78 (which is probably what you would take to get into NJ). Let me know if you'd like a list of area school districts to check out.

Lori, If you don't mind teaching in city schools, I understand that there will be alot of teachers retiring in the Allentown school district after this Spring. Also, if you want to get into a school district subbing is one way to do it. Around here, (I'm just south of Allentown, west of Bethlehem) all subs have bachelors degrees and many have bachelors in ed. The commute to NJ doesn't look too bad on paper but route 78 will get old fast. There are several school districts within 40 minutes of Bethlehem but still in PA. If I were you, I would try at least looking around here first.

What about Hellertown, or the Easton area? Close proximity to 78, quick commute to Jersey. I live in Quakertown and I can get to Jersey on 78 in about 30 mins, but housing prices here are outrageous right now.

Thank you for the advice. I'm open to looking for jobs in PA and I don't mind teaching in the city. I have a Masters degree and 4 years of experience, which should help, I gues that I was just hearing a lot of negative advice about there not being any teaching jobs in PA.

Does that make any sense, that there would be NO teaching jobs?? I would just make sure that you are certified to teach here: http://www.teaching.state.pa.us/teaching/cwp/view.asp?a=3&Q=22613&teachingPNavCtr=|#2536 And then just get your resume out. Tis the season to hire...
