Default Moving to Bethlehem area....

My husband and I are thinking about moving to the area. We are from Las Vegas, Nevada. I am a teacher who has just completed a Masters in Administration. Any thoughts on what I have heard "through the grapevine" with regards to the school districts growing in your area? Any thoughts on districts? Thank you for any info

Generally, Teaching positions are hard to get in the area and there is a hiring freeze in Bethlehem School District. I know people that have been working as aides and subs for years, just hoping to get a classroom position anywhere in the area and they are certified in PA. The certification is a whole other issue. You will not be able to teach in PA until you get that - Pennsylvania Teacher Certification: How to Become a Certified Teacher in the State or PA | Suite101.com My daughter is a teacher and about half of her friends that graduated with an education major (and certification) are teaching and the rest are subbing. She graduated college in 2007.

Pennsylvania has 235 colleges in the state and most of them offer an education major. So, every year there are literally thousands of students graduating and certified and looking for a minuscule number of jobs. In my school district this year there were less then a handful of hires. The reason for the popularity of jobs is that our teachers are well paid and the teachers unions are strong- if you get hired, you are pretty much set for thirty years unless you seriously screw up.

BUT, once you are certified and if you are willing to work in one of the urban districts your prospects might not be that bad.

If you are willing to work in Allentown, you can probably get a job.
My impression is that the Admin positions tend to go in-house--not sure if that is due to union rules that require schools to interview and hire from within first, or just that's how things work out.
