I got lost on the way to Jim Thorpe and drove through it. Not much of a town, but kind of built up for a coal region town, but maybe its more of a Poconos town. Really ugly strip mining on the mountain south of town ruined what could be a really scenic view.

Default loose cannon reply

Hey, I pay good money for my "booze" and Metalica, I don't think so! I'm in school right now away from my home town but I'm looking forward to going home to my small helpful community! Also locals are trying to reverse some of the effects of the lost vegatation on the Blue mountain, so far so good. So what I say to you, is if you really beleive that our town is full of a bunch of drinking hicks, well, we are glad not to have you.

IMO, Palmerton has lots of potential. It is a cute little town and I've found the people there to be super-nice. I am the organist at the church in Aquashicola, so I'm in that area weekly. I love how the "yield to pedestrians" law is strictly enforced and how people immediately come to a stop when you step in the crosswalk. They are working on reforesting the mountain, and there is more green up there than ever before. On the plus side, the view from the Appalachian Trail on the deforested section is really neat.

Some of the downsides are a lack of good local jobs. Most of the youth go away to college and never come back. Most people also commute for work down to the ABE area. There is that whole contingent of youth who have nothing to do and merely sit on their cars and down by the park chatting on Delaware Avenue at night. I have found the grocery stores in town to be a bit dirty. However, there is a neat town swimming pool, and my kids love the park in the downtown. I believe the annual festival is this weekend as well. It is also nice to have a tiny community hospital so that you don't have to drive all the way to Allentown for something minor.

Now, can someone please explain the "Zimmerman's Iced Tea" phenomenon? That stuff is just gross yet people all over town are drinking it.

I am aware that Jim Thorpe has a good Irish bar called Molly Mcguires. I was there once and had a good time.

Zimmermans Iced Tea is the worst tea I ever drank......and when I think of Palmerton, I think of New Jersey Zinc Company. And unfortuantely, contaminated soil but you cannot blame the people for that.

Now Slatington I think of, as it was, "Slutington" for some reason. LOL....

Palmerton's mountain is really becoming much greener now, and it would be hard to recognize that mining had taken place. Some new restaurants have opened along the main street. There is no contaminated soil. The EPA tested each and every property and removed and replaced any contaminated soil. I'd recommend making another visit. It's amazing the difference that a few years can make.

My Mother in law is from Palmerton (moved from there 50 +) years ago and my husband and I went back there a few weeks ago for a relatives funeral. I must say that I thought it looked like a pretty nice town. Wide streets, lots of businesses and people walking around. Except for the aforementioned mountain, I liked it.
