UGH. What a circus that place is... loud drunk people who only dress "up" once a year (most likely the tags are still tucked in - the Macy's return counter following opening weekend will be busy). Whores trying to look like chaste southern belles, which contradicts their Suntan City full body spray tan and deep tongue kissing with their social status boyfriend. Yuck.

If you want a preview of what lies ahead, Hunter Thompson wrote a great article on the Derby which generally applies to Keeneland, too.

"Thousands of raving, stumbling drunks, getting angrier and angrier as they lose more and more money. By midafternoon they'll be guzzling mint juleps with both hands and vomitting on each other between races. The whole place will be jammed with bodies, shoulder to shoulder. It's hard to move around. The aisles will be slick with vomit; people falling down and grabbing at your legs to keep from being stomped. Drunks pissing on themselves in the betting lines. Dropping handfuls of money and fighting to stoop over and pick it up."

JohnsonKK, how do you get box seats? I've guessed that the boxes stay in families forever and have run into dead ends when I look into buying a box. Any ideas?

The Hunter Thompson piece applies to the infield at the Derby (at Churchill Downs in Louisville, for non-Kentuckians reading this), not to Keeneland. I've never seen anyone in the condition described above at either the spring or fall meets - most people are quite civilized and gracious there, in fact. A few race-goers may overindulge and get a little tipsy, which is deplorable - but not falling-down drunk. The hunter-green-jacketed Keeneland staff would make quick work of anyone in such a state, I would expect.
