lexingtongal, I agree....I always smile when I see posts describing the terrible traffic in and around Lexington - these folks must not have lived in places with *really* bad traffic. Try the Southeast Expressway out of Boston at 5 pm and then talk to me about traffic .

Or Honolulu! The traffic there is some of the worst I have ever experienced!

Wink Response to initial inquiry

Kentucky is indeed one of the most beautiful states in the country. I would advise you, however, to avoid most of the small towns -- especially in the central and south-central areas -- if you are disgusted with jingoistic behaviors. I have lived in four states and Kentucky has exhibited the least tolerance for "outsiders" of the four.

Lexington is indeed beautiful and I really like Bowling Green and even parts of Louisville. I would just advise to use caution about the smaller towns.

We live an hour SW of Louisville in Breckinridge County where there are lots of houses for sale with acreage CHEAP. There are lots of mennonites and amish and I think these country people will accept anyone from any faith and they are so nice and friendly. That would be an hour from the Louisville airport, which I understand is a biggie.

Norton Commons

La Grange is nice too and has a quaint main street downtown, but the part where you exit the freeway kind of ruins it for me.

Louisville has a covenient, cheap airport that is well located. from Prospect or La Grange, it would be 20 to 30 minutes with traffic. It has direct flights to many major US cities, but is lacking in direct international flights. Oddly, it lacks direct flights to a couple major west coast cities like LA and San Francisco too, but the advantage is the airport is one of the cheapest in the entire Midwest and South along with the airport in Indianapolis. Cincinnati/NKY international actually has the highest fares of any aiport in the nation!
Could someone give me more information about Moser Farms? We may be relocating to Louisville with UPS, and want our children to go to Oldham Co. schools. We saw something in Moser Farms, but don't know a thing about the area. We would like to find a family-oriented neighborhood and an active church (non-denominational). Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

My parents both have taken ill (they live in PA) and I have received a fabulous job offer which will require travel and we are considering KY as the place to live. The bad part is we have about 1 month to give notice and move our belongings sight unseen (maybe) across the country. Exciting, huh? Anyhow, we are thinking Lexington as I have a nephew living in Danville, who I would like to get to know better. Is Lexington nice? Progressive? I am not looking for a culture breaking community. We intruded here three years ago and as all outsiders are treated here, we're ready to leave. Much of the treatment and lack of social openness stems from the Mormon religion...HERE. I have met folks who are Mormon from other parts of the country and they are great people. Even Mormons moving in here say it's weird...nonetheless. We would like to buy a nice house, say 1600 SF with some acreage (2?) close to the town but not too close. I need to be able to access and airport within 1 hour so that is a concern as well. I really need a Home Depot and some shopping areas would be nice. Crime is a concern! I know, I want it all, don't I? Really we want to move there in hopes we can meet people our own age and be accepted for who we are, not our religion. Can anyone give us some advice? Thank you all. Mark
I don't know much of the Morman faith, so please excuse me for being a bit niave in this reply. In the Crestwood KY area (40014) there are two congregations with a Temple next to one. Everything else you write about needing is right here in Oldham County. You are about 1.5 hours from Danville, 75 minutes to Cincinnati International Airport, 30 min to Louisville International Airport (which has some of the lowest airfares to anywhere in the US with a huge presence by Southwest Airlines, as well as Delta, US Airways, Continental, Frontier, and several regional carriers)

look at Welcome to OldhamCounty.com! to see a lot of information about Oldham County

M, Lex is unique, well-educated, reasonably tolerant to most ideas. To get 2 acreas and within an hour of the airport is very doable.

Strip bars are the hot spots in Lexington if that tells you anything. I recommend living somewhere outside of Fayette county myself.
I have lived in Lexington for all of my almost 45 years of life with the exception of two different time periods totalling five years during my childhood. That statement is completely wrong.

Crime and traffic in Lexington are no where in comparison to most other larger cities. There's crime and there's traffic... but neither are out of control or unmanageable.

"Strip bars" are the hot spots"????? What???? Well, not for the crowd I am friends with. There's city parks, museums, movies, shopping, horse racing, arts and crafts fairs, restaurants of all sorts, skateboard parks, wildlife refuge, abundance of sports venues.......

The north side of Lexington is the oldest part of Lexington and "in general" would be the part of town that I'd avoid. Again, though that's a very general statement as much of the newest development in town is on the north side of town in the Hamburg area which includes homes in the 400,000-500,000 range and some of the best shopping available.

The comment about crime was hilarious. I have never been in a situation where I have felt unsafe, even in some of the seedy areas. I don't walk around those areas at night and advertise my presence but I have never had a problem.

I WILL say, this all personal opinion, that Lexington's traffic is bad for a city of its size. I will not say Lexington's traffic is bad when compared to a major city -- like Chicago, LA, NY, etc. That to me is apples/oranges.

I do think Lexington's population has outgrown its infrastructure and the city officials have do very little remedy the problem. I think there are far too many stoplights which lead to those annoying clogs and not enough routes without stoplights where a driver could get around faster. For example, Man 'O War was at one time supposed to be one of those stoplight free routes through Lexington but subdivisions and commercial development raised the need for A LOT of stoplights.

I'm a home health nurse and use to actually see patients in their home (I sit on my duff in an office now) and have gone into homes in those "seedy" areas. I agree with you 100% - "hilarious" is what I would say as well. Crime happens in Mayberry for pete's sake.... Lexington is hardly a hotbed of crime.

Maybe you know the answer to this easydoesit? Aren't there talks of expanding Man O'War in some way? Also, do you know what the concrete sidewalk appearing thing on New Circle Rd is? I didn't vote for our newest mayor, but he does appear to be tackling traffic as a major issue... which is good of course.
