Default An update (and Gimme It and Micah Girl, where are you?)

I just wanted to post an update to everyone who has been so kind to help me during our move to Lexington. We are here!!! We are living in an apartment temporarily (didn't have to sign a lease because we are working through a relocation company here) so we have residency. The problem is that now we are having trouble finding a house within the school district where we live (Rosa Parks/Beaumont/Dunbar) and would like to look in other areas, but that complicates school registration because if we buy a house in another district within Lexington we won't be able to close on it fast enough to get residency established there so the kids can start school in that district. So we're in limbo... looking forward to getting out of this 2 bedroom apartment (family of 5) and into a house!

We found some houses we like in Firebrook, but again, it's not in the elementary school district in which we currently live so we would have the above problem... and Firebrook is really far out. I worry about the commute time. Also the kids would have to ride the bus to and from school for like an hour each way. Ugggh...

So we're even thinking about Versailles again.

Thanks missymomof3! This has definitely been an adventure I know it will all work out but getting through the process has been a little stressful.

Have you checked out Palomar?

Also, I am just curious but the elementary school the deal breaker? Would it matter to you if your kids when to a different elementary school but wound up in Beaumont/Dunbar? Most parents I know really value the high school more than anything (those critical teen years)

Thanks easydoes it! We have been looking in Palomar but there is just nothing for sale in that area right now that we like or is in our price range.

It wouldn't matter if they went to a different elementary school but the administration of Fayette county schools tells me that at this point, I can't register my elementary aged kids at a different elementary school other than Rosa Parks. So we can't buy a house in, say, Lane Allen or Garden Springs because the kids would have to start at Rosa Parks and then transfer schools after just a couple of weeks. We are looking in Beaumont/Dunbar and would love to consider other elementary school areas within that same middle and high school district but we're told we can't without the kids having to change schools. And they are upset enough about all of this that I just don't want that.

Well as a parent of three I will tell you that the elementary school is just as important. I didn't realize that my kids hadn't been taught to tell time until they were asked to read a standard clock (all my clocks were digital) and I didn't realize it until they were in the 4th and 5th grades! Had they been in traditional school here in Louisville to begin with, I would have never had that problem.

Oh I gotcha. The system was a little different when I went to school but I did go to Dunbar and Beaumont but the elementaries are different now that Rosa Parks has come along.

I am not completely familiar with the neighborhood school district zoning but I will ask about a few more. I imagine you have checked around the Harrods Hills area? I grew up in Dogwood Trace which I understand is not Rosa. It is a nice place to live. Wish I could help you with more suggestions.

Dunbar is a very good high school. From my observations, Dunbar attracts a lot of very good teachers/students and for the most part it is a safe learning environment.

I met a mom last summer who had a couple of kids in the middle school at Tates Creek. She was actually trying to sell her house to get out of the Tates Creek district so she could move her kids into the Dunbar district. According to her, Tates Creek middle isn't too bad but she had heard bad stories about the high school. Anyway, I am not surprised you have some competition in that area. Best of luck to you!

Now, ic-epi, since you have ALL had such a stressful time with the move, school situation, etc., load up those kids and take them to the Children's Museaum, and get ready for a day of fun! We went a few months back, and my brother-in-law and I carried on worse than the kids (hehehe!)

Welcome home!

Hi Ic-Epi,

I really feel for you. This experience sounds so aggravating. The only bright light is that it WILL be eventually resolved, and you and your family will able to kick back and enjoy your new city. But in the meantime, I suggest you take up meditation and yoga...deeep breaths

I wish I could tell you what to do about the schools, but I'm not sure. This may sound silly, but is one of your children more flexible and than the others? Handles transitions better? Let's say it's your youngest. You could send him/or her to private school until middle school if the zoned elementary isn't great, but the middle school is. Or there can be variations on this theme. Your middle schooler can go to private for a couple of yrs until he/she gets into Dunbar. The good thing about a private for a yr or two is that it doesn't matter what "zone" you live in. You would'nt be tied down to a neighborhood. I'm just rambling. Keep in touch.
