Hello,

I am currently looking for an apartment.
I wanted to know if somebody can tell where I can live in the north of Lexington?

Thanx a lot

Is it safe to live in the north part of Lexington?

Seriously?

Depends, on what "part" of the north part. There's several new neighborhoods, particularly off Leestown Rd. Really avoid the Winburn area and Georgetown Street area.

I saw graffiti on a stop sign near UK's campus one time and just about jumped. Then I went to Los Angeles and Chicago and life was put into a different perspective.

However, Lexington is very unusual in being an Eastern city that can still have neighborhoods much rougher and higher in crime than they appear to be. I mean, they might still look lower income and might even be "rough" looking to someone from a rural county. However, compared to New York and Chicago, it can be deceptive. Now, Lexington doesn't have a particularly high crime rate, but it is prudent to research, view statistics and talk to Metro Police if you have any concerns or questions about neighborhoods before moving. Especially on the north side, where it can vary block by block or cul-de-sac by cul-de-sac.

Generally, InLondon above is correct; be very careful in Winburn (off Russell Cave and Bryan Station Roads just inside I-75) and Georgetown Street (from Downtown to New Circle Road).

The interesting thing is most Lexingtonians percieve the city divided btw North (bad) vs South (good) when crime maps show the city divided btw East (bad) and West (good).

Halfway through 2011 Lex has had nearly as many murders (12) as it usually does in a YEAR (15). There have been 12 murders east of Tates Creek Rd/ Newtown Pike and ZERO west of those roads.

I live about one mile from Versailles Rd (Garden Springs area) and everyone thinks I live in a bad area. Well its been 7 months since a murder has occurred in my half of the city, in the same time frame 3 murders occurred in Hamburg (a "nice" area) and 4 just north of "wonderful" Hartland/ Cumberland Hill. I actually had a cousin and her family move from Gardenside to the Tates Creek area because they perceived it as being much safer!!

(NOTE: there have been two additional murders since the updated the map. One at Liberty Rd/ New Circle and one last night at Appian Way and Tates Creek)

Anyway, for the original question... I (as a single man) would live in most areas of NW Lexington (north of Versailles Rd, west of Newtown Pike) other than the Oxford Circle/ Hill Rise areas off Versailles Rd. I would only hesitate to live in NW Lex with a family for the high/ middle school districts. Leestown M.S. and Bryan Station H.S. are the worst schools in the city based on test scores. Sandersville Elementary - in the Masterson area - is one of the city's top elementary schools.

Huh. I stand corrected on my original opinion comment! I come from a place where no day goes by that the local news isn't reporting on one or more homicides! From my perspective, Lex seems extraordinarily safe! My apologies!

I like the west and north sides as well as portions of the east. I avoid the south side as it generally lacks character. The areas previously mentioned should be avoided as well as most of 4th through 13th (I'm pretty sure I'm divvying it up properly) but Lexington is a city of pockets. Find a good one and you're set.

This is an old thread, I know, but is Hurricane Hall Rd. in a safe neighborhood?

The only bad thing about somebody reading these posts is they totally write off all of a road that was mentioned. Madgie sees to avoid Georgetown Road and now wonders if Hurricane Hall Road is a bad area.

I am sorry Madgie, the area the posters were mentioning is much closer to town than this street. You will be fine here.....you'll hear the noise from the interstate, but this is not the section of Georgetown Road to avoid.
