My company's executive team, which will include people coming from Italy, Brazil, and San Francisco, are coming to Lexington next month and they are wanting to eat at a place that is true Kentucky. A direct quote from the CEO's assistant is "something very KY, BBQ, live music if that is an option." Eddie Montgomery's was going to be their choice but they have decided it's too far since they will be in meetings all day. Does anyone have good recommendations? It obviously has to be somewhat nice since these guys include our global chairman, CEO, CFO, etc but they know by asking for "true KY" it's not going to be really nice.
Haha, easy buddy. I'm born and raised KY and will live here the rest of my life. You misunderstood my comment. These are guys who are used to 5-diamond restaurants every night in Italy, France, etc. They want good 'ol KY cooking, something I want to make sure I choose wisely since I will be showcasing my state to 20 people from different parts of the world. You and I both know good and well they aren't going to get 5-diamond restaurants if they are looking for southern cookin', but I don't want to send them to a hole-in-the-wall either. As I mentioned, Eddie Montgomery's was their choice but it'll just be too far for the night they want a place to eat, so they are looking for something along those lines.
True Kentucky cooking does not come from a culinary school trained chef. Nor does it come with a twist or a flair for style, it comes from learning at the side of your mother and grandmother and from having recipes which call for simple combinations of meat and vegetables.
My suggestion would be somewhere along the lines of Ramsey's and a few other home cooking style places. Not 5-star dining but real Kentucky style food.
Hall's used to be good but last time we went there is was nasty. We were the only people in the whole restaurant and it was really dirty. That would be the last place I would take someone from out of town.
True Ky cooking is a matter of opinion isn't it? Ramsey's is okay but they cook their food in a commisary and distribute it to all their locations. How authentic is that?
