Renting in and near Danville (Jackson: apartment complexes, to rent, townhouse)

Can anyone give me pointers on specific areas or places to avoid? Or places that are recommended?

I'm guessing the east is more expensive and out of my range and far up north too? The south with the many clusters of apartments should be OK but not the best? Should I be looking by Henry Jackson park?

Ideally I would like to rent half a duplex, or a small house. A townhouse or part of a residence would be the next best. If I can't find any, then a standard apartment.

I have seen some that look good and inexpensive, but I don't know anything about Danville. Are there parts of town where poorer people live and there is more crime, so I should avoid those apartment complexes? The cheaper ones seem a little desperate to get it rented.

I also know very little about living in any small town.

I would prefer a place that's out of the way, and more quiet, but I have to balance it with the cost. $425/mo that includes water and trash, or $495/mo with electric would be roughly the budget.
