I'm visiting a clinic in Lexington from out of state around May 21. I can fly or drive solo and I'm considering whether to bring my wife and three kids for a longer trip (say a 4 day weekend). My kids ages are 6, 4, 2.

If this visit goes as expected, I will be returning to Lexington for a surgery and would imagine I'll be hanging out in the area 7 to 10 days.

Looking to see if there are recommendations on events, things to do, etc., with a family with kids my ages. Haven't found much on the web but still in the early research stages.

Thanks.

The Lexington Children's Museum would be lots of fun for your kids - it's located downtown in Victorian Square, with free parking and access off Short Street. Your family might also enjoy the Kentucky (State) Horse Park, located on Ironworks Road in the thoroughbred horse farm country just north of town. It includes lots of interest for all ages.

If you have time, a trip to Boonesboro State Park in Clark County or to Old Fort Harrod State Park in Harrodsburg might be fun as well. Both include reconstructed pioneer forts with cabins including demonstrations of traditional crafts. Shakertown at Pleasant Hill isn't far from Harrodsburg and could be included in the same trip quite easily. I do not know if Shakertown's Dixie Belle riverboat will be operating by May 21, but it's fun, too, as it travels through the exceptionally scenic Palisades (300+ foot high limestone cliffs which line the Kentucky River). Keep an eye on your little ones while on the boat, though.

Kentucky Down Under is located just outside of Horse Cave, about two hours southwest of Lexington, and includes not only a very highly decorated smallish cave, but Australian animals and birds up on the surface. Children love it.

Hope these ideas help, and good luck with your treatment.

Have you looked at visitlex.com? The Arboretum has a new children's garden. There is a small fee (I think around $2 )

A trip to a horse farm or to The Kentucky Horse Park would be a great way to spend an afternoon.
