Where can I find it?? Haha! I have been craving the Chicago style pizza since I left the Windy City on vacation.

There aren't a lot of choices for genuine Chicago-style in Lexington.
I've heard some good things about "Slice of Chicago" on Jersey St near campus, but I haven't been there myself. As a former Chicagoan, I know that craving!! ![]() |

I'm not 100% sure what is Chicago-style (I sort of know, but I'm not an expert), but my neighbors took us to Joe Bologna's on Maxwell. They have regular and deep dish, very good.

Chicago style is over-rated, there is nothing spectacular about deep dish. You can buy it anywhere, just as good in Chicago. They got this place Geodonno's that everyone loves in Chicago, I've tasted the same deep dish in our local pizza place in Taylor Mill.

Home Located just south of histric Old Louisville, this place is in an older commercial area close to Churchill Downs. The area is home to a poor to low middle class population and an increasing immigrant population. You will find a few Arabic and jallal meat stores nearby. Their pizza is pretty good. If you do not like it, let me know and I have a few more options for you. Also, if you like the traditional "old school" Chicago Italian-American corner restaurant with the old pictures and the red checkered tablecloths, try this place: HOME They have a location in Indiana, but it is not as good. Why anyone would choose Olive Garden over a place like this is beyond my imagination. It is located at 909 swan street in Louisville, and it can be hard to find. Have their number handy or bring a mapquest directions. It looks like a whole in the wall from the outside, and it basically is, but the food is delicious and the atmosphere is like the old Italian corner places in Chicago. Get the Amatraciana, it is amazing! Also, for a Louisville/St Louis twist on Italian, they have fried raviolli that is well worth the trip there. Want Chicago Vienna beef dogs or Italian beef? No problem. Located in the more affluent "downtown" area of the inner ring suburb of St Matthews, Lonnie's is great: chicago lonnie's loc: Louisville, KY - Google Maps |

It is spelled Giordanos. I'm not even from Chicago and the slamming of their pizza and butchering of the name offended me. You can't get Chicago style deep dish just anywhere. I've been to Gino's East and one other place in Chicago (can't remember the name, it's been too long) and you can't get pizza like that in KY at anyplace I've ever been. I prefer NY style pizza, thin crust, cooked in a coal fired oven. I still enjoy Chicago deep dish, but it is a completely different animal. It is like a cheese and meat pie, a casserole may even be a better term. goldenmom: Joe B's doesn't have Chicago style that I know of. Deep dish and Chicago style deep dish aren't the same. |

A lot of non-Chicago "deep-dish" or pan pizzas have very thick crusts with a normal amount of toppings.
Most of the original Chicago deep dish pizza places actually use a thinner crust than that, but put it in a deep dish and pile the toppings on. Like rnc said, it is more like a casserole than a traditional pizza. You have to use a knife and fork to eat it with any decency! Giordano's is actually famous for their stuffed pizzas. It's similar to some of the deep dish pizzas, but it has an extra layer of dough on top and even more toppings stuffed inside...almost like a pie. Of course, don't forget the Chicago flat pizza! Thinner crust, crispy on the bottom, cut into squares...yum... And of course, throw in some 'beefs' with sweet peppers and you've got heaven! Is it dinner time yet? ![]() |

I've been to Louisville a few times but didn't find great pizza there either (sorry Stx). It might very well be hiding there for the people who know about it.
But I have to say that since moving to Lexington in July, we haven't really found any great pizza places although we have tried. My kids have adjusted to living here except for that! LOL We miss real pizza... We've asked everyone and have gone all over in search of great pizza. We have tried all the recommended places here in the Lexington area and they are all just OK (more expensive than we're used to, also). The best is probably Brooklyn Pizza downtown Lexington, but it's expensive by our standards compared to quality. In terms of chain pizza places (a lower level of quality, but still good), we miss Godfather's a lot. There are no Godfather's around Lexington at all. We are looking forward to real pizza when we go back to Iowa for Thanskgiving Sorry, but it just isn't here. |
