Default Northern Lexington/Georgetown?

Hey everyone. My girlfriend and I are looking to move into probably either the Northern Lexington or Georgetown area in about a year or so. I am currently a student at EKU in Richmond she will be working in Florence coming up so we are looking for a place thats about an hour's or less distance for us both and Georgetown and Northern Lexington was mentioned in a previous thread that I made in the General KY forum. I have looked at some apartment listings in Georgetown on the web and they are pretty steep just for a one-bedroom. Are there any decent priced apartments in the Georgetown or Northern Lexington area? Where exactly is "Northern Lexington"? I do go to Lexington often, mostly to Fayette Mall and Hamburg... Thanks for the help!

Hi,

I can only help with the last part of your question ... Fayette Mall is pretty much directly south and Hamburg east/southeast. North Lexington (at least according to the map) would be basically between Leestown Road and Newton Rd/Newtown Pike. Also Georgetown Road is just in the middle. So, landmarks might be the Lexington Cemetary, Eastern State Hospital, etc.

We stayed at the Four Points Sheraton at the intersection of 64 and the Newtown Pike over the summer which is up there, but somewhat far out from New Circle.

I tend to like the website apartmentratings.com; also back in my old home (Washington DC) people do a lot of rentals on craigslist.org. Lexington definitely has craigslist, but I don't know if it's great for apartment searches, it might be!

I know there are some neighborhoods in there to definitely avoid, so others can point those out. I saw some mentioned in a thread somewhere, recently!

good luck!

There are plenty of options and opportunities for you and your girlfriend in the areas you mentioned. I'm a real estate agent living in Richmond, working out of Lexington offices and covering the triangle from Lex to Lou to Cincinatti. I'm a transplant myself and really do like it here, but it does help to know the area when you land here. I woul be glad to help you any way I can... contact me at realestatepro@bellsouth.net if you like and we can chat it up for a while. I'm always excited to see new folks come to town and it has become a niche for me. I'm a constant recruiter for Kentucky, but it helps to have a man on the ground so to speak. Otherwise, Good Luck and welcome to KY!

The trouble with most of the apartment complexes and rentals that you will find in N Lexington is that they are usually older, sometimes poorly maintained, and often in less-than-ideal neighborhoods. You could probably find a reasonably-priced apartment there, but I would be very careful about researching it well. Personally, I don't know of any that I would recommend but I'm also not that familar with the area. I do know that sometimes there are farms that have small cottages or farmhouses onsite that they will rent out. You might also want to check out the rental ads at kykernel.com - they are geared for the university community but sometimes you can find decent rental prices across town.

Georgetown does have decent apartments but you will usually pay more for them. If you ask around, there are often homes for rent that are targeted for co-op students and Toyota employees who are on short-term assignments in KY. Try looking in the local classifieds:
Georgetown News-Graphic: Classifieds
Most of Georgetown is fine but there are a few sketchy areas around the town.

Northern Lexington is basically the area north of Main Street and between Leestown Road and Winchester Road. Much of that area is pretty sketchy and I usually tend to avoid it if I can. Fayette Mall is basically on the south side of Lexington and Hamburg is on the SE side. Commuting is never a problem here to those places, but I would actually look at apartments in Scott County over northern Lexington as apartments in N Lex. are typically older and not well maintained and also due to safety concerns. Have you looked into apartments in SE Lexington or SW Lexington?
