Quick question about private schools near Lexington. I may move to Lexington and teach in the private day setting where the districts do fund the private day placements because they do not have appropriate abilities to meet these students needs. I'm actually looking for private schools for specifically autism where I may be able to teach. Any good recommendations?

I am considering a move to Lexington with a 14 yo w/ autism. I would also be interested to hear of any possible improvement in the autism education scene in Kentucky in the five years since the OP. 2:24 ratio is about the worst I ever heard of.

I would never send my kids, autistic or not, to a Kentucky Public School.

Oh, what a sweeping comment from you, homieJ!

When I was back in the Lexington public school system, my fellow students and I were taught to look askance at statements including "never", "always", etc. There are exceptions to just about everything in life...

A friend of mine is a speech-language pathologist who works in special education in a local public elementary school. She has many students who fall somewhere on the autism spectrum, but has them only briefly, perhaps for half an hour twice a week or so for individualized instruction (which is more like therapy in most cases). She is heavily burdened with required documentation, record keeping, and recommendations for each of her students, for the local, state, and federal levels, and thus she often works long after the school day has officially ended, getting home around 9:00 or later many nights each week.

The students at my friend's school range from children with very mild Asperger's to children with severe autism to children with other special needs, some with difficulty in articulation, others with difficulty with receptive and expressive language due to various causes. Some of her students have typical intelligence while others are intellectually impaired, again due to various causes.

Such circumstances force my friend, and others like her, to be very, very stretched, yet these specialists remain dedicated and involved with their students. There just aren't enough special education teachers and specialists in the local public schools to serve the student population at optimal levels - those who are there are doing their best under difficult circumstances.
